Big storm = no power

A major storm front rolled through here about 4pm. Still thunder and lightning outside. As a result, there is no power for several blocks including mine. Fortunately we have a backup battery for our sump pump so I can keep the fridges cold. If the outage lasts - the power co says it could be days - I have a small generator to recharge the backup battery. Oh how FUN! At least I have my smart phone to send this message!

Didn't loose power yesterday but it was tornado city all around me. I think there was 21 or more of them yesterday and I saw 2 of them from my deck. In a normal year there are only 21 in a year.

Power back on at 5am. Looks like I won't be needing the generator today after all.....whew......

The frequency of T-storms is one of the things I don't miss about living in Illinois (Troy).

Yeah, that was delightful, wasn't it? I was in Bloomingdale, near Stratford Square Mall, and for some reason they'd closed down the road I wanted to take (Army Trail Road). Meanwhile I'm watching this front roll in (it was nice and sunny at the time!) and trying to fight my way through traffic to Rt. 64. I finally get on 64, go about half a block, and the front rolls in. I just pulled into the first parking lot to wait it out.

Our power only went out for a few minutes, though. The clock on the stove was blinking, but was also correct!

Try that for six weeks...and that's the short run !

The closest I've come to a situation like yours was when I lived in Rochester, NY. We had an ice storm - it rained for 17 hours at 32 degrees. Turned EVERYTHING to ice....blew out transformers, took down trees, power lines.... No power for 11 days which is when I bought the generator I used last night.

One lesson I learned last night is to do an annual service on things like my generator! We all know what happens when something sits for a LONG time without use - gas turns to varnish, etc. So was the case with the generator. Fortunately I was able to clean the carb and rig a temporary gas tank (borrowed from my snow blower) and had the tools, supplies and ability to do so. The generator's gas tank is a sludge/varnish coated mess and the fuel valve needs rebuilding or replacing. That aside, it ran perfectly. Fired on the first pull of the cord. Gotta love Honda products.

That's all my kids were worried about last night...the TV. Why doesn't the TV work, Dad? They didn't seems to understand the connection between the house being dark and the TV not working. Ah....kids!

Thankfully the generator was able to power the TV until they fell asleep.

We lost power for 12 days the year,'89, that HUGO paid a visit.
Cooked everything in the freezer on the camp stove. Hot water in abundance.... gas. When we finally got power, the power company buried their truck in the back yard.

Six weeks!!! Just shoot me!
