Restore a 66 MGB top to bottom. Got the title but lost the vin plate.:rapture:
Now what!
How do I get a new vin plate.
The car is going to my daughter in Massachusetts. I have the car titled in Ohio and has historic plates on it. I wonder if I put the car in her name in Ohio and maybe she won't have a problem transferring the car in to a Massachusetts title.
Any suggestion?

Have OHIO Sec. of State or Dept. of Registry inspect the car an issue a new VIN, then car can be transferred without problems. Also. if Mass. is like Maryland and other states on the coast, a body inspection might be required for rust, so you will need title to be true anyway.

:iagree: since you have the title.

Also, according to Clausager's Original MGB, on many cars, the factory stamped the ID number on the inner face of the front frame rail, just behind and under the front engine mount. Welcome aboard! Since you're starting right off with an MG specific question I'm moving this thread to to MG forum.
 
As Randall stated, Moss has period-correct ident plates, no problem.
 
As long as you have the title Clarke spares and restorations in Doylestown PA can stamp a supplied reproduction plate. His work is fantastic and will look just like a factory stamping.
 
As the legal paperwork is in your name, leave the state out of it! If humanly possible, never involve any governmental agency, which is self explanatory! Replace the plate and no one will be the wiser! You are not breaking any laws, your just replacing what was already there! I think chassis stampings ended with the 55 TF, not sure. My 55 TF has a chassis number, but I never found one on the B. PJ

Thanks for the response.Got the new vin plate and had it done at a jeweler.Looks very good and authentic. As for state highway office they referred me to the salvage dept. The lady I spoke with knew nothing. Told me I was out of luck and I could not prove that the car and title belong with each other.I will tell you the car does not look like a 66. This car was put together from many stripped and junked MGBs,maybe 10 or more. Front end is different,back end is different. Engine was replaced,dash replaced. Wiring all new and no electrical problems . I started on this car in,I think in 86,finished in 2012. I'll let you all know how it turns out in a couple of weeks.My driver is a 79 MGB with a 215 V8 from a 62 Buick in it.It's not a rocket but it runs strong.

And ZAR I can pretty much assure you that if you drive up in a Studebaker and tell them it is an MG they will believe you. My inspector (Ontario) asked, what does MG stand for? Walk in with registration, play it straight (and dumb), don't volunteer any information and you will walk out with the tags you need.

and don't forget, you have a better than 2/3 chance of getting an employee who wasn't even born when they made your car - and probably a 50/50 chance of getting someone who wasn't born when they stopped making MG's period.

Not many folks have heard of Morris Garages.

My TR3 has Triumph logos front & rear, and I still get asked "Is that an MG?". Funnier still was the parts counter kid, who kept asking me "Who made that?" and "Is that a Ford?". We all got a good laugh out of that one.
