A pilot had a miracle escape yesterday when he bailed out of his Second World War plane after a mid-air collision at an airshow.
Thousands of people watched as the P-51 Mustang plane clipped wings at the annual display show and plummeted to the ground south-west of the former World War Two RAF Duxford base in Cambridgeshire, yesterday.
Pilot Rob Davies parachuted to safety following the mid-air accident at the Flying Legends show which happened after three planes had formed a triangle in the sky.

Very sad for the 51, but that's one reason why you'd better know who's flying off your wing. Could have been a lot worse, thank God they both survived. Formation flying takes a lot of practice and should never be done with out it. Been there, done that, but only with the best at my side. PJ

Paul- I still get nervous flying (circling) in lift with 6 or eight other gliders.... constantly looking around, above and below me. I'd rather just leave and find my own lift!

Elliot, I have to agree with you 100%! Even though it's done all the time, a group chasing a thermal, is a disaster waiting to happen. I stay clear of those if more than one other glider is present, and then I want to know who's in it. PJ

Looked from the video that at the time of the collision the Skyraider was behind and below, so I'd think it was his responsibility to keep track of the P-51 and stay out of the way considering he was in the blind spot. Leader chooses the path and followers watch the leader.

Yes, particularly from the second video, it looks like the pilot in the Skyraider was clearly at fault. He looks to fly from underneath and behind right into the P-51.

Amazing video, and yes, sickening. Its surprising that the plane with the wing clipped half off actually landed, but the P51 looks pretty much intact all the way down. That pilot didn't have more than a second or so left to bail either.

Look at the 51 again. Big chunk out of the lower fuselage behind the radiator hump. Prolly took out some control cables. Pilot had little to no time to lose on that escape.
