If you bring a car in from out of state, check your states regulations on title transfers. Some states, including Oklahoma, have a small grace period to transfer title, or it's going to cost you more money, a lot! Just transferred title to me from South Carolina to here after 3 years of working on it. Makes no difference if it is not road worthy, in Oklahoma there's a $100 fine for each year not registered. Cost me $329.00 to register the car. She asked me how long the car was here and like a dummy, I told the truth! Should have said 3 months not 3 years! The truth can come back to bite you at times! Being truthful just cost me 300 bucks! :rolleyes2: PJ
 
I did a Model A once...TPO...Title Purposes Only...no tax....9 years later tags, no tax....
 
That must be something new. I transferred the title on my Sprite-In-Boxes a couple of years ago after owning it more than 10 years. Considering all the national push to get "old cars" off the road, I thought it best to do it then rather than wait until road worthy. It did have an Oklahoma title but had not been tagged since mid '90s. I had to pay two years of past tags, just like I remembered from years past. Don't remember the exact amount but the total bill was less than $75.
 
It is new Bayless, within the past few months. Last week I went down to get tags on my work truck expecting to pay about sixty dollars (for three years tags) and was told it would be over two hundred ($100 fine for each year it wasn't tagged plus the tags to make it current). The gal who runs the tag agency in town said it was started in March. I think I'll drive up to Quapaw next week and transfer the title to a tribal one, that way I'm only paying $30 for a title and tags; it's a long drive and will take all day but it will be worth saving the money.
 
I just sold my daughter's 2007 Mini convertible for $8K. She had lost the title (although she claims she gave it to me for safekeeping) and I had to obtain a form and a letter from her credit union who financed the car and gave it to the buyer - a Hispanic woman from Ecuador - along with a $25 check for the duplicate new title. But - and this is important - I would not let her drive home on I-95 with my daughter's plates. She'll have to register the car in her own name before I let her drive off. Years ago I had a case where a woman sold a car to some guy, never kept a duplicate of the bill of sale or anything else, and let him drive away with her plates. You guessed it - he got into a bad accident on the Cross-Bronx Expressway and a few weeks later, she got sued by the injured party. it took quite a bit of talking on my part to get the NY lawyer to drop the case against my client. Proof again that no good deed ever goes unpunished. Try to be a good guy and lend your plates is a sure way to get into big trouble.
 
I had to have DMV convert from an Alabama bill of sale to a title and was concerned it would be a problem, not so, it was easy until I got to the penalty phase for 3 years not registering it! Would you believe Oklahoma tag agencies do not except credit cards! Good thing I had some cash on me. Oh, wait a minute, a Wells Fargo stage just went by followed by the Pony Express mail man. Their replacing our crank phone today, were get a dial phone! Ah, modern technology, great isn't it. :highly_amused: PJ
 
In Illinois you have 30 days to title the car and you better have a bill of sale if you bought a fixer upper. They charge taxes on restored value if you do not have the bill of sale and after 30 days, might as well get a loan. They also know what states sell by bill of sale, so if you buy without title from state with titles on just a bill of sale there is a very lengthy process to get it titled.
