Not long ago vettedog72 posted a picture of the interior of his car; in the picture was a narrow center console from JC Whitney. I bought one and purchased a cheap beverage holder from Walmart (I think it was designed to wedge between the seat and tunnel or something), hacked it up a bit made it fit the console. No more crotch temperature soda.

The seats are Corbeau Classic buckets. The back is fixed, they have headrests and inflatable lumbar support. I think they have the "correct",for me anyway, look for a 4. I did thin down the bottom cusion on the drivers side for a little more head clearance with the top on, the car is a surrey. The seats are narrow, my "bucket" fits just barely.

I've gotta get something like that for my TR6, especially in this hot weather. I almost wore another can of Sprite today.

How long agao was his post?

I have Corbeau Classics in my TR6. I really like the look in my car (and yours), and they're a heck of a lot more reasonable than the TR6 replacement seats from VB. I'm just a few pounds away from not having my bucket fit in the seats, so this may inspire me to lose a little weight. I think I'll try thinning the foam a little in my seat like you did. There's not a whole lot of space between my legs and the steering wheel, and I feel like I'm sticking up out of the car a little too high.

The car is a surrey, so no tonneau cover. I keep a blue tarp and bungies in the trunk, not very elegant, but putting the top on is a real pain with these. I don't know how to link to vettedogs post and picture; you can use search. Type in whitney and it will show up.

Hi again,

I agree those seats look great in there. I'd looked at the Classics and wondered how they would fit. I think Revington TR sells a version of them, which I've seen photographs of, fitted in various TRs. (Rather than Corbeau, I think it's Cobra brand in England, though Revington's have their own logo on them.)

I also have an original hardtop/backlight, so am very interested to hear about head clearance issues. I'll also be installing a custom roll bar close-fitted to the backlight frame and notice that the seats don't appear to have a lot of clearance near their top corner, i.e. right at the B-post.

Good idea, removing some of the seat foam to lower the pad and help with head clearance (I'm about 5'-9", so am not sure if this would be a problem). If you find your bottom bottoming out, you could go to a denser foam in there, I'm sure. Any chance of also using particularly flat mounting brackets to keep the seats low in the car (such as modified versions of the original TR seat brackets)?

What waist/bucket size starts to be a concern, if you you don't mind me asking? (I've got a 34" waist, at least for now.)

So, now if only a used set of those seats would show up on eBay or elsewhere (will definitely be recovering them to match the interior of the car, so no sense buying new and then ripping the covers off).

Another seat I've considered at is Corbeau's Clubman. A bit plainer looking though, and its headrest is built-in/non-adjustable.

Anyone know of any other similar seats commonly available here in the U.S.? Need to be fixed-back and preferably have slots for 5/6-point harness.

P.S. Mark, why not pickup a folding surrey (vinyl) top and frame, for those rainy days? I have to assume you don't drive around with that blue tarp on! Good repros of the surrey insert and its frame are available from several of the major vendors, and/or the frames show up used from time to time on auction sites, etc. The vinyl portion is even available in white, if you prefer to match your car. You already have the forward snaps and trim that are needed, installed on top of and at the corners of the windshield frame (TR4A/250/5 need to have those added and the polished aluminum trim on top of the windshield frame switched to TR4-type, in order to use the two-piece hardtop and Surrey panel.)

I too bought that center console from JC Whitney and jury rigged it to hold my cup. When the lid is closed you don't see anything. For the wife I mounted one of those cup holders likes Moss sells on the tunnel. Folds up when not in use.

OK Alan, I am 5'11" pant waste size is 36" weight is 205. I also am using TR6 wheel which provides some additional leg clearance. Thinning the seat cushion has not lead to any bottoming problems, the seats are well made and the cushion material is dense. That and I probably spread the load a bit.

The mounting brackets are pretty flat, about the same height as the originals. The problem as I see it with the surrey is the rear glass framework, a seat wide at the top won't fit. I use a five point harness when competing in SOLO II, but I have to bolt on the steel hardtop, yuck! I do have the folding frame and top. My reference was to assembling it when parked for the night or to keep out the sun. They are a pain. The front of the top has to be fit into a slot on the top of the windshield screen then comes four hooks, I think nine snaps, and two wing bolts.

The neat thing about a surrey is that if it is cool out they can be made comfortable by rolling up the windows and turning on the heat.

Mr Prandy
I was thinking of getting the Corbeau Classics for my '74.5 TR6.
Can you use the standard tonneau?
What did you do for seat brakets?
Approx cost per seat?
Any suggestions on who to purchase seats from?
Thank you very much.

richards,

The best deal I found for Corbeau Classic seats was at www.streetortrack.com, where the seats were $239 each and brackets $59 each with free shipping (total $596 delivered). That was last year, and I just checked and the seats went down to $227 (shipping is still free) but I don't know if the brackets went up or down. The Corbeau brackets are listed on the website, but the ones I used weren't on the list. I emailed them and told them what I needed, and Shaun at Street or Track told me that universal low-rise brackets would fit if I drilled a couple of holes, and they did. I mounted them with bolts and the biggest washers I could find, and they seem solid to me.

I don't have a tonneau, so I have no idea if it would fit.

BTW, they acccept Paypal payments and as far as I can remember, the seats arrived within a week of ordering.

I hope this helps. Let me know if you have any other questions.

The only thing I would add is I really like the optional lumbar support.

MrPandy,
Does it feel like you're sitting higher that with the stock TR seats? I'm interested in these, but I don't want to be sitting any higher than I am already.....
Thanks, GT

grossgo,

I really don't know, since my car had some other kind of replacement seats that were even higher than these. The Corbeau seats are almost flat on the floor, but the bottom cushion is pretty thick. I'm considering thinning the bottom foam like TRMark did. There's a foam shop right in town, so I may take the piece over to see if they have something similar so I won't be messing with the original, just in case I totally screw it up.

It looks in the pic like you might be sitting a little lower than stock. It would be nice if it was a little farther back than stock too. On a TR6, the seatback adjust lever prevents the seat from going all the way to the back of the floor. That few extra (even a COUPLE of extra) inches would be NICE...... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif

GT,
I just discovered my mistake last week. My drivers seat levers were hitting the rear lower trim preventing full rearward movement. Turns out I used the wrong seat to rail mount holes. The seat has 2 set of holes. On the door side the front hole should be used, on the tunnel side the rear hole. The seat now misses the trim and moves rearward a couple more inches. It's a 5 minute check and repair if needed.
