Best Wires?

Yeah. On the road at 6:00AM tomorrow with a two hour drive and then four hours of engineering meetings to look forward to. UGHHHH!

BUT, if I can get back on the road early enough, I get to pickup thee oil pan down at the Cape. One more part off the list to be done.

Thanks a lot , Bill- really appreciated.

I replaced DPO Pedro's mess with TRF green and then
was told the green were not strong enough when I rewired
the car and installed a GM alternator.

So I bought the cobalt blues and keep the greens a spares
in emergency parts department in my trunk.

The fit of the Cobalts has always bothered me since they
are so short they overlap and touch each other and No.1 plug
wire is actually in tension. I was just getting ready to
make a post like yours!! Thanks!!! PM address to you.

Here's my short Cobalts in case anyone is thinking of
ordering them. I would advise against them.

Isn't that distributor the wrong way round?
Lets put it this way, none of the other TRs I've seen have #1 on that side...

Alana-

There was a great debate last November when
I installed a total car new electrical and wiring
system including Jeff's very outstanding rebuilt dizzy.

For whatever reason, the position you see works in
my car. We tried rotating the dizzy 180 degrees, switching
wires, etc.

It functions very well and I am leaving it at that.
Greatful for whatever small gifts of reliability I
am given.

Bill: did you really say 1500 watts. Let's see, at 100 percent efficiency and assuming 12 volts, that's 125 amps. I'd love to see the size of those cables!!! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/shocked.gif

I saw that too alana - even went on to view more pics to make sure my ride was not 180 out. For TDC on my 73 its about 8 o'clock looking straight down. Hey Glad its working for you Tinster - but now I have to ponder why.

On a 4-cyl TR one can insert the distributor drive (and then the distributor) 180 degrees out of position (or other locations) and still get the correct firing by arranging the wires to fit the new locations. You can't fix that by simply repositioning the distributor as the drive dog thingy is asymetrical and only mates up one way, you have to pull the drive gear that engages the camshaft and reinsert it (maybe a couple of times until you like what you see).

I have always assumed that the same would be true of the 6 cyl engines.

A correctly oriented distributor cap looks better and also reduces the chance of misconnecting the plugs wires (in the case of the 4-cyl it becomes impossible to misconnect the plug wires).

Lets not go there again. I still have a head ache from the last time.

???
It's not *that* hard to fix. The only reason I mentioned it was because he was complaining that his wires were too short.

Newsflash: It's not the wires...

Alan-I think we had this conversation while you where away for a while. If you look back to the threads he tried everything. I always thought that it was just 180 out but if you look at the photo you'll notice the advance mech. would be against the block and that is what started this problem he could turn the dist any more.

Shhh! You'll only confuse the issue with facts !

errr ummmm ... wasn't that distributor tweaked and set by a highly-regarded Triumph wizard on his visit to Puerto Rico?

BINGO!!!...................Don

Great memory you have.

Yes indeed, you are correct. When we tried to install
the dizzy 180 degrees, the advance hit the engine block
before the correct timing setting could be attained.

I think the final conclusion was someone previously had
been working down in the engine and installed the dizzy
gear in reverse.

The engine starts on the first crank, purrs at 850 rpm
idle, growls all the way thru 2nd gear and shuts down
instantly. What better timing setting could you ask for??

Thats good by me!!

Banjo and that Canada Guy Dave sure know their stuff.

It may not be correct by all of our standards, but the simplest and easiest solution for ALL OF US, is to let Dale install a longer wire and let this thread fade into page three of the archives........

153624 his is the same order as if firing from 8 o'clock counter clockwise except its starting at roughly 180 out. Wierd

If you loosen the clamp on the distributor where it bolts into the block - you can rotate the distributor body pretty much anyway you want except that the vacuum advance units would not move past the block. It is running so I guess it really does not matter - so sorry to dredge it up - glad again its working nicely!
