Not to hijack the post, but just out of curiousity, is there a huge benefit to the high-torque starters? My 250 had its original starter from 1968 until a couple of years ago, at which point I sent it as a core for a rebuilt one from TRF. The replacement works just fine. Again, just curious!

Hi Bill - I put a high-torque starter it the TR4 and made a huge difference. It spins over much faster now and also seems to be easier on the battery.
Doesn't sound or look very original, but mine are drivers...
A rebuild around here costs as much as a new one, so figure why not 'upgrade'.

I bought mine from Dr. Marty at British Starters. He sells on e-bay also. He lives near me, so I just go and pick up parts I buy from him. His prices are much less then Moss.
BTW, he is a real medical doctor, and he got started selling British car parts while going to medical school to help with the expenses. He's an LBC enthusiast, and has just continued to sell parts.

TRF had a deal on starters this weekend, but it may be over now. They were about the same price as the site discussed above. Also, on these special deals, they take the orders and then place the order. I can takes weeks to get your part. That is what they did on my Pertronix special deal. It made no difference to me because the car is no where near running.

When I got mine, I did some searching on the web and found https://www.gustafsonmachine.com/ If you click on their dealer list you will see all of the usual suspects. (BPNW, TRF among many others) I just searched for the best deal.

Ditto that. Ted Schumacher actually supplies Moss with their high-torque starters. I had a difficult time getting one to fit and Ted helped me out a lot with the right starter (one from a 250 with the proper adapter for a TR6), all at the right price.

I was under the impression that these starters actually spin the engine slower (compared to a properly operating original Lucas starter). My understanding was they use a gear reduction to have more torque but that reduces the cranking speed.

I've wondered about that also. Does it only "sound" like the engine is turning over faster, but it's really just the starter spinning faster while the engine is actually turning over slower than with a regular Lucas starter?
