Best Roads in North America

Ron, you're talking about the 101, which sporadically merges with the 1. It's a very nice drive, but the scenery is far superior on Highway 1 proper.

Funny you mention Big Bear. That might be our last destination of the trip to attend GoF West if the timing works out.

And thanks to everyone for the additional info, etc. I'm still digesting it all! I know most of the country's main routes but the local viewpoints are really helpful.

Ok, I have to ask, how did you do that first pic? Photo shop effects or did you have the camera strapped to a VERY FAST and steady rodent!?

The salt flats photo? I'll start by saying that it's a real event, not fiction. However since we were by ourselves I had to do quite a bit of post processing (in Photoshop) to combine three separate photos into one. It didn't come out quite right but doing any better is beyond my abilities, and more importantly patience.

Ditto on driving on driving through Cape Breton. Depending on your starting point make a trip to PEI via the ferry and then the bridge leaving or coming on to the Island. If you would like specifics on where to stay or what to see let me know as we have family in the Maritimes(NS, PEI & NB). Summer is the time to be in the region.

How about a side trip to the Rock? .......Newfoundland, you will never forget it!

Take my word for it, as a native So Cal surf'n farmer.

Okay, not 101. I'll do some research, map reading and get back to you. Numbers like 57 or 83 are stirring in my grey cells.
One is the most picturesque coastal route though.

Steve- are you interested in gathering a private list of member homes the 2 of you could stay in??? Seems to me you should be able to tap the BCF B&B supply almost anywhere in the country.
Just a thought.

Paul, it isn't out of the question. I'm still working on routes and deciding not what to see, but rather what we have to skip!

Ron, from Southern to Central California there are only two coastal routes unless I'm having a brain fade. Hwy 1 sticks to the coastline and 101 wanders in and out, sometimes merging with 1. From Central to Northern California the only continuous route along the water is Hwy 1 although there are other highways which fork off and merge again. There is the 211 which was supposed to be part of Hwy 1 but ended up as a separate loop.

Dart, we usually travel with no schedules or reservations for accommodations so typically we just look around for a quiet, out of the way place wherever we end up for the day. I will certainly keep the idea in mind though, thank you!

Steve;

I agree with dart on the BCF B&B
In fact, Annie and I would certainly wine and dine you here in southern Ontario. And as a bonus, we live on the 2 lane road that crosses Ontario from Detroit Mi to Buffalo NY.
Close to Niagara Falls and some great roads for sports cars.

The best road in America is the one to my home after a long trip!

Steve -

Don't know if it was already mentioned, but the Natchez Trace Parkway is a wonderful road, with very little traffic. Limited access points, and some great scenery. Map here .

And here's the complete story of the Trace.

Summer will be a bit "toasty"! Depending on when and if you take it, Janet and I might even join ya!

I read your 10,000 mile trip posting to my wife; she is very worried I want to the same in our TR4.

Consider entering or leaving Yellowstone via the north east entrance driving over 10,800' Beartooth pass. Spectacular drive! I have a cabin south of Red Lodge half way between Billings and the park entrance. You are welcome to use it. Because of the high ground water, I recently put in a very expensive septic system; I need to get the cost per flush down.

Mickey, Natchez is in the plans but not firm yet. The only firm plans are the Pacific Coast and some of Western Canada.

Mark, I've traveled Beartooth Pass before. You're right, it's beautiful! On this trip we will most likely be entering the park through West Yellowstone and exiting to the south. And thanks for the offer by the way!

Steve -- on a side note, go to https://www.byways.org (a USDOT site) and request their free 124 page brochure. I just got mine, and it's a surprisingly thorough look at great roads in the US.

NEXT time you come through Eureka -
- give me a call on the telephone!

Dunno if you're going through PA or NJ, but...

Rt. 611 as it snakes along the Delaware river is a great twisty LBC road. There's a great brewpub just over the river in Milford NJ (www.shipinn.com)

The Milford Best Bitter is outstanding; goes well with the Lancashire and onion pie.
