Well... I had Friday off so I decided to do two things this weekend. Move the temp sending unit to the head (from the radiator), and put in a 160 thermostat (going to start getting hot here in a few days)... Everything seemed to be going just fine....

Put everything back together yesterday - wanted to give the sealants time to set, so didn't do anything else until today. While I was putting the coolant into the radiator I could hear running water – not a good thing... Turns out the sending unit was not seated well enough, so water running out of the threaded in part... Darn! Yep! Those were close to the exact words....

So spent the past few hours trying to figure out a method to seal it up…. I decided to go with a little bit of creative gasket making, and now my fingers are crossed.
Wish me luck.

No clue where you would put that temp sending unit in the block??

The engine is a 1275, so there is a place just below the thermostat housing...

Ahhh, 1275, that explains it, thanks.

You must use the leter spacer on the temp gauge probe in the head or it will bottom out.

Yea... I got the spacer via Moss...

I have always just gooped it up with Permatex Blue and stuffed it in (after I was sure that the threads were clean of course)

Yea, I did use some RTV black as well as the gasket idea... I'm hoping it will seal. Funny thing is it didn't leak when the sensor was in the radiator - go figure...

Well... Yea for me.
It doesn't seem to be leaking anywhere, and it is very nice to know what the actual engine temperature is while driving down the road.
The car seems to be running a lot cooler with the 160 thermostat - turns out the old 180 thermostat (which was not that old - 2 years tops and very short mileage) was opening at about 190... And yes I did check the new one in some water on the stove before installing it.

I’m a happy person.
