At the end of June,we'll be flying into Norfolk,VA,
& driving to Richmond.
From Richmond,we'll be heading down to Ocean Shores,NC
for a week.
Just wondering what the nicest route would be to drive?

Don't think there is a lot of choices Doug

Without looking at a map to see where Ocean Shores is, I think your choices are to take I-64 East to the coast and head South, or take I-95 South for awhile and head East towards Manteo. If you are going there on a Sat., the traffic jam on the road South from VA can be huge starting mid-afternoon. The road in from Manteo is usually much less conjested, you just have to make a pretty big swing around the Dismal Swamp to get there. Again, writing this w/o map consultation so don't anyone flame me for being stupid. Please. Enjoy the beach, Doug. Our family will gather in Nags Head in August.:cool-new:

We're heading out next Friday for the Outer Banks. We plan to head down the coast, out on the peninsula of Chesapeake bay (Rt 14?), across that really long bridge, skirt around Norfolk, then on down to Kitty Hawk.
Last time we went we got stuck on the DC Beltway for 3 hours on Friday evening. Not again!

Bay Bridge Tunnel is a great ride. If you are looking for some fishing go to Teaches Lair in Hatteras adn try to go with Capt Jim Bowman on Marlin Mania.

Rather than I-64, just a few miles South of Richmond you can take State Road 460, a nice two lane less congested route. Stop in at the famous Virginia Diner for lunch and stock up on the equally famous Virginia Diner salted peanuts and country ham for the week at the beach. Cheers!

Ben, WHY can't you be there at the end of June? - we could meet up."You should have been here yesterday..............." - Doug

Agggh! that would have been cool! but, here's the reason. a week long rental on a big, 6 bedroom house, hot tub, right on the beach, 2 weeks from now $1000. at the end of June $4000. And we are ahead of the wave of tourists.

Did this ONCE, in IIRC 1982. Ever since, we leave Maryland at 3:30AM (we use Rt 17 through VA), have breakfast at the VA/NC line and am on the OBX by mid-morning.
