Best $200.00 I ever spent on my MG

Hey gang,

Well some of you might remember my ranting last week about that anoying exhaust leak that almost ruined my weekend jaunt to the San Diego British Car Day Show & Shine. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif But luckily it held off until I was headed home.

Anyway late last week I got all the required gaskets & hardware from Moss Motors, including a nice "new" stock exhaust system. The plan was to install it over the long three day weekend (had Columbus day off) but my wife nixed that idea & wouldn’t let me off from my other obligations and honey dos around the house. Like any good husband I relented to my wifes wishes and it started to look like the poor old gal was going to have to sit & wait for me. That’s when a friend suggested paying a local muffler shop to install it for me.

I ended up taking it to a small local shop right around the corner and he gave me an offer of less than $200 out the door. Called him back that night said he was having some "trouble" and wouldn’t have it done until sometime in the afternoon the next day.

Happy day - as promised it was ready by 1pm. I asked what kind of problems he had and the list went just as I'd suspected. He had to pull the manifold just as I had to do the last time I did this (this guy was a lot bigger than I BTW /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif), and while he was doing that he actually broke one of the bolts that holds the manifold to the head.

What I found interesting about his story as we talked was that he told me that he didn’t trust the weak looking Moss Motors gasket that had the “heat ring” that goes between the catalytic converter & the manifold. So rather than take a chance he made one out of metal like you find on more modern cars. Some of you might remember my complaints about the gaskets. Anyway, I’m not 100% sure if it will work or not, but he told me that if I have any problems to bring it right back.

When it was all said and done I sheepishly asked what I owed him. Just the $200 buck he said. All I can say is that was the best dang $200 bucks I’ve ever spent on my MG and no cracked knuckles or grease under my finger nails.

Happy Motoring!

Whoops! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif It looks like the guy who installed my new exhaust system couldn’t figure out how to re-connect all my plumbing. Several lines had either been left disconnected or ran to the wrong locations.

No harm done, as everything else seems to be in place now.

Sounds like you owe him a cold one!

Glad it turned out so well. For those of us who are facing replacement of exhaust systems, can you give some particulars on the seal/gasket he used?

Bret, I hope the gal you referred to was the car. There's not much room to be sleeping in the B! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Hi Mickey et al,

I had trouble getting the correct gasket locally.
I ended up taking what was left of the old one to the
parts shop and the guy there found one that was close to
the same size. I had to enlarge the holes a bit. The things I looked for were:

1 - Proper exhaust gasket (metal faced over ??)

2 - The hole is the right size.

3 - It covered the flange area (even with the modified
mounting holes).

Seems to work great thus far.

Note: it seemed like 9 out of 10 parts folks haven't got
what it takes to handle this because most just said they don't have one. Another gave me some "heat resistant" gasket stuff to make my own. That lasted about 1/2 block.

Only one guy seemed to have the knowledge and willingness to
look for something that would work.

Dave
