I’ve always loved these. I can’t recall exactly how many of these where made I’ll check my library when I get home. That said the history alone on this one would seem to be the main reason for the extraordinary asking price.

Berlinette GT on Ebay

0 bids thus far, but they are looking for $45K+ just to start.

Too rich for my blue collar blood, but it’s a great looking specimen none the less, I always wondered why this styling didn’t catch on. I think I actually like it better than the normal GT.

NO! NO! NO!

Retirement Gift: 6 month trip to Alaska followed by a month in Russia (Petrozavodsk - St Petersburg area)....no Coune's!

Basically, BMC didn't approve of the design, Coune tried selling it to them (and I believe this one here, the RHD version, is the one he gave to BMC), so they would have likely been an expensive car to purchase.

There have been many articles written about the Berlinette, and one criticism has been that the styling didn't quite suit the MGB market. I think I like both designs (Berlinette & MGB GT) in their own way. I would personally buy a GT coupe over the roadster any day. And for as often as a Berlinette comes on the market, it might tempt me at the right place but I don't think I would pay too much for it.

That particular car is well known. Aside from being featured in "Original MGB" (as Steve noted) it's been the subject of several magazine articles, at least twice in Classic and Sports Car. The original roadster used for this car was Tartan Red, which it still is in the engine bay! Frankly I'm surprised to see it on Ebay.

If I had a million dollars (and start my collection of rare variants of common cars), a Coune coupe is on my list. Much more so than a K-car (a nice Reliant auto-mobile!)
