Bent camshaft for 64 BJ8?

The machine shop doing my engine tells me that the camshaft is out .004". Moss' camshaft lists for about $750. Is there a better place to purchase a new camshaft? What is the maximum runout allowed? Thanks and have a good day!

John

.004 is not much runout. I could not find a spec in my manual though I think it should probably be .001 or better. Still, a camshaft is very soft in bending and the bearings should easily force it into compliance when fitted.

I thought it was a common practice for machine shops to straighten a camshaft using two v-blocks, a dial guage, and a strong arm or 2X4. They need to measure the runout at each bearing to deduce where the bend is and then apply force to correct it.

Unless there are other problems with the shaft, suggest you look for someone who can straighten it.
