Bent a Lifting Eye.....Whew!

Whilst re-installing my engine/tranny I apparently put a lot of boing on the lifting hoist which resulted in my bending my rear lifting eye forward. Man, that is a lot of weight, especially when you have to tilt the whole setup 45* down. My poor little lifting eye must have been fatigued, having removed my engine as often as some people change their underwear. Retorqued the 2 bolts holding on the block and promised it that I would never do that again, till the next time.


There is sooooo many things to hook back up after a process like that.

I only wish I were as far down the restoration road as you are. We purchased our TR6 a year ago last fall and drove it last summer with a minimum of work just to get an idea of what needed to be done.

Thinking of installing "zippers" so things come apart and go back together quicker. I plan on restoring it in stages and will probably have the engine and transmission out at least three or four times before it is completed.

I bent the lifting eye on my engine the first time I pulled it off the frame. I think its just a weakness in the design as the pressure angles easily bend the eye tab.

Make sure you don't get a leak from behind them. They go directly into the oil passages and will leak like a sieve if not sealed.
 
Paul, how would advise sealing the bolts? My front lifting eye came in the trunk, I shudder to find out what's up in there!

I don't know if there is anything behind the front lift plate. I found out about the rear by accident while chasing a valve cover leak that wasn't a leak at all. The bolts in the rear plate go through the block and into the oil galley. If you remove them slowly, you can here a hissing noise as the pressure releases.

In any event, I used TRF part #114024 copper washer to seal the bolts. This is the same part as is used in the bolt at the rear of the head where the auxiliary oil line will go. I used this heavier gasket on those banjo fittings as well.

No, that's a good answer! I'm familiar w/ that copper crush washer, as I have the aux oil feed standing by..... before I order some from TRF, I'll see if I can get some from my FLAPS. Thanks again....
