Hey Ben,

I got my eye on this future projects car.

I'll bet I could get you back on the island
as Head Wrench for this one.

Wendy says "No Way!" but I betcha we could
pull it off?

BTW: What year, model is this Jeepster?

It started on the first twist of the key.
A really tough looking, old guy drives it.

I dunno Tinster, that dash looks a bit complicated for me /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/rolleyes.gif

That is not a "Jeepster" nor a "Jitney"

I'd say it is a real military "GP" aka "Jeep" that was built too late to be sent to Euorope for WWII.

The pintle hook hitch is a good clue. Also, the engine may be a Ford instead of Willys.

The roll bar and top were added much later in its life - not OEM.

Tough little machine!

I like it, but where do they hide the CD player?
Tinster, it wasn't Pedro driving it was it?

Nope, Don. The round fender versions didn't appear until 1952, with the Willys M38A1:

Years Produced: 1952-1957
No of Units: 101,488 (80,290 domestic use / 21,198 foreign sales)
This was the first appearance of the 'round-fender' Jeep that would eventually become the CJ5. The M38A1 was quite different that the CJ5, having a stronger chassis and reversed front spring shackles, in addition to the military accoutrements such as standardized GI instruments and a 24 volt electrical system. The M38A1 lasted quite awhile in military service. Even after it was replaced by the high-tech Ford M151, they could be seen in OD green as late as the 1970s. In all, 101,488 units were produced, some of which went for export.

Looks like one I had access to in the early '60s. It was military surplus with a deep water fording kit. The F-head four was a pretty strong engine.

There was more instrumentation then on this vehicle so it looks like Pedro was at work again, so Dale, stay away from it.

Also the one I ran around in had cruise control (a rod you could pull that was attached to the carb linkage).

It also looks a lot like the one I "liberated" for personal transportation in VietNam in '67. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

Oh yea! there's a beach buggy! Looks like the crew had already pinpointed it for ya, Definatly a tough old bird. My concerns would be how much of it is original and how much is homegrown. Like was stated above, the roll bar is rom later. the seats also look to be from the 80s or so, and that's just what we can see from outside. who knows what evil may lurk beneath the sheet metal.
but otherwise a VERY simple and stout machine.
Of course you thought parts for the TR6 were hard to find in PR!! wait till you needed something for that!

I agree - its the civilian version of the M38A1...nothing special except its old...though it is interesting that it has a pintle hook.

I saw one on a flatbed yesterday heading home from work. I actually stopped & looked at it thinking what a great project it would make.

Now, a military version of an M38...that's something else altogether...had one of them once, wish I'd never sold it!

Mine's close enough

Hey Ben,

Anticipating David's arrival, I purchased that old CJ-5
last week and started the restoration stuff I'm good at.

David dug into the mechanicals as soon as he arrived and
together we worked thru the night. The cave visit was a
ruse. The girls went, we stayed working the CJ.

Whew!! Mostly finished and it looks a bit better than
the first photo. What do you think??

Nice Jeep... ya can't fool me, but still a nice CJ5.
Here's ours. took this one today during our "leaf-peeping" tour around the backroads.
This is on a "seasonal limited use" road called "Church Hill".
The only traffic we encountered on this road was a couple walking thier dog.
Drove around for several hours today, only passed a handful of cars. Ahhhhhhh. I love Fingerlakes traffic.

Hey it's OK This happens every year at this time. We call this Hockey season. Ya know, where ice does more than just cool drinks.

Actually, that's why I went south. Another week of summer before the top goes up and the car goes away. Having a good time wish you were her, I mean here.
