Belleville Washers in BN2 Steering Boc

The Moss catalog calls for 6 'belleville' washers under the rocker shaft in the late BN2, early BN4/6 steering box (Moss part# 725-115). Mine doesn't appear to have ever had them; anyone know if they're required? I'm guessing yes, because otherwise the rocker shaft looks like it rests on a rough surface but, they list for $12.79/ea, and if they're not necessary--or if anyone knows of a cheaper alternative--I'd prefer not to spend that much.

I'm thinking they're as much for preload as an isolator. They get stacked for maximum extension (for lack of a better way to put it...).

This is out of my BN6L/942, which has the earlier fast-ratio box with a flat cover (unlike your MKIII).

Thanks, Randy. This is for my BN2 so it has the flat cover as well, and I agree these are probably for pre-load on the rocker peg. I noticed both earlier and later box rockers have spring-loaded roller peg assemblies to pre-load the worm and peg. Just can't believe these go for almost $13/ea ... got a cheaper source? Are you saying they get stacked back-to-back--for lack of a better term--for max extension and preload; e.g.

Yes, each similar end together, or the opposite of "nested" (pretty sure we're on the same page here, just don't know what to call it). ;)

Looks like these are spec'd as follows: OD, ID, thickness, dish and flat load. I think it would be a real SWAG to get those :confusion:

OK, back with some numbers.

Steering shaft OD = 1.000"

Belleville washer ID = 1.055" = approx 1-1/16"

Belleville washer OD = 1.497" = approx 1-1/2 "

Thickness = 0.023" +/- .002" I measured all of them that I have.

Dish = approx .030" from flat. (height at ID - thickness(.052"-.023"=.029"))

The raised-lid box I have has definite wear marks from the washers. The flat-top box has been thoroughly cleaned and marks from washers are not as obvious. In both cases, the box has a machined flat surface for the washers to rest on. This machining in the flat-top box is rather rough compared to the later box.

Hope this helps!
