BEIGNETS!

It's the coffee that gets you. Cafe Au Lait. Coffee, Chicory, and boiled milk. With plenty of sugar to offset the taste of the chicory. Chicory root is roasted and ground like coffee. A coffee extender, if you will. From the old days. Gotta have lots of sugar or it's bitter. Or just dunk your beignet into it. Gotta love it.

Ah, that explains it - we bought some chickory coffee a few months ago to get that great flavor, and were really surprised by the bitterness. Didn't realize it was the whole package that made it work.

Not to stray too far off this thread, but does anyone know if Petunia's is still around as it was say 15-20 years ago? It was a little hole in the wall place on Conti. Not that is was unique for good food in New Orleans, but it was a nice quiet stop and the breakfasts and crepes they had were great. I did a quick websearch and it pops up, but seems to be tied up with a place called Oceana so I'm wondering if its changed.

And I'm curious about "The Napolean House" restaurant in the Quarter....is it still open? And how about the Irish Pub just off of Decatur Street in the Quarter?!

Pretty sure Napolean house is. Where 'bouts off Decateur? (which end?)

How 'bout the Camelia Grill, down at the trolley turn around. Still there?

That Camelia sandwich was to die for (so was the coconut cream pie). And the waiters did a "song and dance" when they put out the napkins and utensils.

Jeez - have't been there since ... 1985!

EXCELLENT! The website's pictures sure brought back memories.

Might just have to stop in there when I drive an old Mercedes through the Southland ...
