In Belgium Stella is a cheap beer, much like Bud in the US. It's fantastic to find it everywhere in the world, they do a great advertising/marketing job.
My favorite Belgian Beers, some of these have been around for centuries.
1. Duvel: Strong blond beer, double fermentation. Don't poor the last 1/2" out of the bottle. Duvel is old flemish for Devil, drink it and you'll understand. Btw 700 or so years ago English and Flemish/Dutch were the same language
2. Hoegaarden: (pronounced here like Who-Garden) Un-filtered wheat (white beer) very refreshing. Served very cold in a chilled glass, sometimes with a slice of lemon.
3. Kwak: Strong amber ale. Sometimes served in 1 litre hand-blown glasses in a wooden holder. In the "Dulle Griet" a pub in Ghent, Belgium where there are 250+ beers on the menu, the bartender rings a bell when you order a Kwak. He lowers a basket from the ceiling and you put in a shoe so you wont run away with the expensive glass. Having the correct glassware with your beers is part of the Belgian beer culture.
4. "Kriek" or cherry beer. This is based on Lambic or Geuze, a beer that can only be brewed in some valleys south-west of Brussels as it is fermented with wild, natural yeasts in fusts open to the air so without addition of cultivated yeasts. This generated a unique cidery, somewhat sour taste. Cherries are added for a second fermentation. Perfect to drink on a "terras" or patio outside on a warm afternoon.
Of course well-known and liked here in the US are the "trappist" or monk beers like Chimay or Leffe and I also should mention "Delirium Tremens" a strong beer with a pink elephant on the label even before you drink the content of the bottle!
Most of these beers are now available in Wholefoods, Trader Joe's, Bevmo and so on.
