Been thinking about this whole turbocharger deal.

Re: Been thinking about this whole turbocharger de

Kim,

Let's see some pics of that soobie turbo you have.

Re: Been thinking about this whole turbocharger de

The Moss SC has an internal bypass, so you are only compressing air if you are accelerating or the engine is under load. However, the rotors are still turning and robbing horsepower.

Re: Been thinking about this whole turbocharger de

This is a pretty neato contraption.

https://www.turbotechnics.com/docs/supercharger/expo.htm

Basically, it's a belt driven turbocharger. They have concated a clever means of gearing to allow the compression side of a turbo to be driven from an every day automotive belt. Probably have to remove your air pump to make it fit though /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

Re: Been thinking about this whole turbocharger de

Hmmm... do you think they'd send me one for some R&D? /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

Re: Been thinking about this whole turbocharger de

I was thinking the same thing. Put me on the beta tester list.

Technically, it’s a mechanically driven centrifugal compressor. (“Belt drive” and “turbocharger” are mutually exclusive, turbo being a contraction of turbine, the gas driven half of the gizmo.)

Belt drive centrifugal superchargers are currently available (Vortech). It will be interesting to see how Turbo Technics comes along with their friction drive

PC.

Re: Been thinking about this whole turbocharger de

Gak! I looked up some prices on the Vortech unit. I think it might be a bit cheaper to call GE and have them send me over a new jet engine.

Re: Been thinking about this whole turbocharger de

yep superchargers are expensive. one reason that I am looking very hard at the turbo route instead.

Re: Been thinking about this whole turbocharger de

I will get a pic of that turbo morris, I am trying to learn about turbos and all. Now if its belt driven, then thats just a blower. Now I paticipated in the cheap and dirty homemade blower version on a POS 4 cylinder olsmobile 4 door cutlas. Made it go from sluggish on the getup to keeping up with the japanese cars on takeoff for a while. No one try this on anything worth keeping but we used an electric leaf blower. Used a 750watt power inverter that creates 115volts from 12volts. Used the cutout vaccumn switch that cuts off the air conditioning when you floor it to cut on the leaf blower and duct taped the blower to the breather intake. made a flapper valve dealy on the side of the breather so the motor could such in air when the leaf blower was off. I don't know how much power this added but you could definitely tell the difference. Also the inverter eats the battery power so you could not use it all the time, but it worked.

Re: Been thinking about this whole turbocharger de

im not sure id admit to that /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/lol.gif you can buy electric "superchargers" on ebay...ehhh Id save my money though

Re: Been thinking about this whole turbocharger de

That's awesome, Kim! I am going to the shed for my leaf blower now!

Re: Been thinking about this whole turbocharger de

I looked at the ebay blowers guys and there is no way they can put out the amount of air off a 115V leaf blower. Even the $300 ones say they are 12v and only pull 2.2 amps, that ain't even what the heater fan pulls. I bet they are a sure fire ripoff. 350 buck one That inverter pulled like 60 amps and you had to drive easy and let the battery recharge after using it a bit, especially with the headlights and stuff on at night. No way a 2amp motor would give you that kind of air. You had to drive around and build up the power to go for another blast. We had a lot of fun.

Quite notable, though a local developer Kolstrup Tuning (no website but see Scanpower A/S near the bottom) has been developing the Rotrex Compressor, who's drive system was developed here at DTU and patented many years ago.

I suppose they are either using the rotrex patents or stealing the idea.

BTW the Rotrex was used on the Ginetta Dare.
