Took about a 130 mile trip yesterday. Olathe, Lawrence, downtown KC and home. It was longsleeve sunshine weather on the road. Purposely started on a long pretty steep hill at 75 in fifth and put the foot in it. At the top, 81. Big smiles! Stopped at a friends speed shop with a chassis dyno and talked about checking the bugeye out, yes curiosity has gotten the better of me.
 
And we want to hear all about that dino testing.
 
Pullin' 81 in top cog uphill means the dyno result will read: "SUFFICIENT!" as an output! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/thumbsup.gif
 
Sufficient? Sounds like over kill to me.

I'm surely impressed. Best I could ever get stock was 73 down hill and down wind.

It must have been really steep hill.
Are you running a 3.9 rear end?

I can't believe the weather...likewise here in OMAHA whole week has been "FANTASTIC". I've made it a point to take one of the babes out each day and none of them have let me down!
 
Trevor, I put the 3.9 in last year and it is one of those things I wished I had done yrs ago even with the stock 1275. It caused you to down shift on the steeper grades if you weren't running the rpms, but who cared. I thought that it simply makes the car less busy (quieter in all aspects). Yesterday, we had a reception for my youngest and his HS graduation. Afterwards I took out several of my British car friends for a nickel tour of the neighberhood. It's fun to have a lbc with the kind of power the bugeye now makes. However, I have an 18 yr old and I'r strugging with how much to let him drive it.
 
IMO, Unless you are in the car, I would not let him drive it. These cars are too twitchy for inexperience/distracted drivers. Of course I used to be a high school teacher so I'm naturally suspicious of all teenagers.

As for the power, it is nice to be able to pass when you get behind someone doing 50 mph on your favorite stretch of rural road. Coming back from a car show the other day I was following a Healey 3000. He passed a slow moving truck. After he cleared I still had time/room to come around the truck. After I came around the truck and got back behind the Healey I had to hit the breaks hard because I didn't realized how quickly I hit 70 mph and the guy in the Healey was only at 55 mph. I really should have gone on around him but I didn't want to be rude. He seemed very afraid of the curves and was on his brakes with every little bend in the road. It was a very pretty Healey, I guess he was be very careful to protect his investment.

Yup, I know I can out race most big Healey's up through about 50-55, but shortly after that they would be shooting by me.
 
I truley think I can keep up with them till I'm afraid to go as fast as they will. About 85 is my limit. Of course, time will tell.
 
I've had my midget at 90+, but it is very unnerving. The steering is very twitchy at that speed, and the least little draft upsets the car. I do not think the stock aerodynamics of the car allows for much higher speeds. I have no desire for high sustained speeds, but I want to be able to blast up to 80 mph to get around traffic if needed.

I took the Midget out for a drive this evening with my 5 year old daughter. She is convinced that it is fast car (we never got over 45 mph). Spridgets can bring a grin to your face, but seeing kids' reactions to the little cars is priceless.
 
The beauty of these cars is that just like with go-carts, the speed "feeling" is relative! 80 mph in a Spridget gives one the sensation of doing 120!!! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/devilgrin.gif
