WHen I was doing site surveys to determine suitable locations for the North Warning system (DEW Line replacement), I remember seeing a couple of Polar Bears on floating ice pack as we flew over in a Bell Helicopter. Unfortunately I didn't have my camera in hand at the right time.

A group of us rode the mixed train from Winnepeg up to Churchill and back a few years ago. This was in August. We stayed the day in Churchill and rented the one town taxi (a van) to take us to see polar bears. The driver said you could find them at the city dump, so off we went. The problem is that he drove slowly around the part of the dump full of old appliances. I pointed out that I didn't think polar bears ate washers and dryers, so we drove out. Sure enough, out on the rocks, was a family of polar bears sunning themselves on Hudson Bay. All the locals told us that in winter, you rarely go outside, since there are marauding bands of teenage male polar bears, the ones who cause problems. I guess it's hormones, just like with human teenage males. At least they don't ride motorcycles...
