One reason many LBC's are relatively affordable to restore is their use of common parts - lenses, instruments, carbs, fuel pumps, etc.

Here's what happens when an otherwise inexpensive car doesn't use these vendors.

Berkeley tach on eBay UK

Berkeley, being a manufacturer of caravans (campers), had no close ties with the "usual" suppliers.

Was it "them" who had a "Bearcat" car?

So are you going after this tach? Considering how rare it is...

The seller is right about the rarity - I've been in and out of the Berkeley world since the sixties and have never even seen one.

To answer your question, no. Very few Berks had them, so they really aren't needed for a good restoration. If I wanted one, I'd probably modify a motorcycle tach to look like the original (who'd know?) since repro instrument faces are still available.

All that notwithstanding, I'd buy one for $250 or less.

Wasen't that the Barkley Bearcat?I believe those were built in the US,& powered by an air cooled VW engine.

There was also a Berkeley in our town. They converted it
to a Honda 4 cylinder (750 motorcycle engine).
I know where it is,but don't know if it's for sale).

Thanks Doug. Engine swaps are (and were) common in these cars - there are several Mini-powered ones, many with various motorcycle and snowmobile engines, and even one (at least) with a Chevy V8 for LSR attempts. I imagine that Honda-powered car flies.

Always been a big fan of the little car.

Would love to take one STRAIGHT through an Auto-X Minefield. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/yesnod.gif

Yes, Doug! THAT was it.. Barklay... Barkley... kinda kit car thing... Shows what state my mind is in, huh? sheesh.

I see the tach sold for nearly $550 USD... just a tad expensive for my tastes... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif
