I currently have the steering rack to my Bugeye on my work bench. It looks like the only thing I know I will need to replace are the gaitors and tie rod ends. In an earlier post, someone mentioned replacing the pinion gear while working on a steering rack. How do you know if the pinion gear needs replacing, and how difficult is it to replace it? I just looked at Moss, and they have one that is $10 and another for $49. I don't understand from their explanation which one I need. Any help to the above questions would greatly be appreciated. I am dying to take this car for a run before the good weather is gone. Thanks for your time, Kevin
 
grease and go - Unless there is significant play in the rack (it is an LBC after all), put it back and go play
 
Those things are tough, good for hundreds of years if lubed.

Clean lube, replace gaters and tie rod ends, rock en roll.
 
I did replace the pinion on Bugsy my '68 and it took the cheap pinion gear. I think the change over is when they chage to a latter style rack several yeaers later.

I will say changing the pinion did substantially tighten up the steering feel. You will need to play with shims to make sure the clearances are correct and they can be simply cut from hobby shop type copper sheet if needed. Make sure you use a metal not a nylon Nylock on the steering shaft to pinion gear connection and replace the bolt as well.

I glued a piece of bicycle inner tube to line the clamps that hold the rack in place. USe a bottoming tap to clean out the bottom of those bolt holes. Also make sure you aren't using bolts too long, I had to add washers as only bolts I was able to get were a hair tool long and they bottomed out in the holes rather than getting tight and rack moved around all on its own, interesting steering effect when that happens. Pay attention to torque specs as those clamps are aluminum. Others have described how to lube with oil not grease.
