BE oil consumption

Are you using 20w50 non synthetic and have pcv in place. The Flying Saucer PCV on my 1098 made a dramatic difference when used with a correctly vented oil cap. The controlled orifice and PCV creates negative crankcase pressure and helps keep oil in the engine. The fact that you are pushing out deals says lots if blowby and something like that might help in the meantime. Gerard has lots of info on his site on the topic.

Jim,

Yes, I am using Castrol 20W/50 non synthetic oil.

I don't know what a pcv is. (?)

I have an original 948 engine.

As for the oil cap, the original one is on the car and appears to be in good condition. There is a vent pipe (rubber hose) from the top of the valve cover which joins a vent pipe from the front air cleaner and runs down to the botttom of the engine, but doesn't connect to anything. There is no oil residue in these (rubber) pipes.

My mechanic asked me to run the engine with the oil filler cover off and feel if there was any escaping pressure from the opening pusing against my hand. There wasn't... only a very slight suction.

Does that shed any more light on the situation?
