BE horn push contact too long?

ok,

I now have my steering wheel nut threaded onto the column - thanks to everyone's suggestions on how to rework the column threads.

But now, the horn push will not stay in place because the contact sticks out too far.

I'm thinking of shaving a little off the contact so it will fit, but am wondering if there's something I have wrong (OK, I KNOW I have something wrong, just not sure what)

Does the hub that sits between the steering wheel and the dash go on with the oblong side sticking up towards the sky? That's how I have it know, but am wondering if spinning it would make a difference.

Any other ideas on what might be wrong?

TIA,
Ed

Did you take that plastic tube thing off. It is only for shipping.

your kidding - really ????

never would have guessed that.

Thanks Jack.

so i assume that means the shorter metal piece goes down towards the hub and the longer piece sticks up to the horn push? with the plastic piece, i figured it doesn't matter, with out it, it probably does.

never, ever would have thought of taking the plastic off.

Hehe, dosn't compress much with the plastic on.

got home last night and looked at the horn push.

Jack, I can't see how the plastic tube thing is just for shipping. The spring is stuck inside it and will not come out.

The push I have came from Moss Motors (part #560-430). It has about a 1-1/2" long clear plastic tube. Sticking out of one end is a 1" long brass-colored piece of metal with 6 sides and a rounded off tip. Sticking out of the other side is a 1/4" piece of the same stock but the end sticking out has a bit of flattened solder on it.

The two pieces are connected inside the clear tube by a piece of wire braid. The clear tube is 6-sided at both ends internally but is round and smaller inside at one point to keep the two pieces apart. The back of the longer piece has a spring behind it so that it is spring-loaded.

The smaller piece of brass will come out of the tube if you push in the longer piece, but the long piece will not come out. I cannot figure out what is holding it in.

Sorry for the long post, but this one's really got me baffled.

TIA,
Ed

Have the part in my hand at the moment.

The short brass end is pressed into the plastic. The long end slides freely.

One end must ride on the brass ring on the dash extender the other must push against the metal on the horn button.

The small end with the ball goes against the dash extender behind the wheel.

To get one to work properly some time ago I had to make a new tube with thin plastic from a tooth brush case, the clear plastic kind. Took a bit of fussing to get it the right length.

Is the contact on the horn button clean.

Jack,

yes the horn button contact is clean.

Everything works, it just won't all fit into the steering wheel hub. The horn push sits out about 3/8" where it sits on the contact.

I think i'll look at shortening it up - either the plastic piece or the long brass piece.

Thanks,
Ed

Guess you could grind off the long end some???
