BE Dash on Ebay

Actually that is a preaty peice of work.

Am I the only one here who doesn't like the look of a wood dash in a Spridget? Just seems a bit too tacky for me (no offense intended....just an opinion).

Not at all. I think the one in my GT6 looks gorgeous, but I wouldn't ever consider putting one in any of my Sprites.
But, for those who like it, I say go for it.

If I were going to do a wooden dash it would not be a wide grained light oak.

Veneer of birds eye maple?

I bid on one last year and conversed with the winner. Thought it might be Drew ? Could be mistaken. Remember hearing it took a while to get the item - went on well and I think it looks spectacular.

If he would have had that 2 weeks ago - I'd have bought it. Re-did mine in a chocolate brown naugahyde. Instruments going back in in the next few days. (AND THEN DRIVE-ABLE !!)

I was looking at them, and even went so far as too make a rough plywood template to maybe make one myself. Never bid though, as I just recovered my metal dash, which was in good condition other than the covering.

Here is a photo from a car recently listed on ebay. I like this look, especially with a green car color. Seems to me the Sprite calls for a clean look like this, rather than a bunch of ugly oak grain lines.

Course, your dash isn't original either Jack -- what's up with the clock? /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/devilgrin.gif

Just kidding, of course. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

But the clock was a dealer optional item and could be mounted anyplace.

Just cause it is from a B it is not orginal, oh the shame.

Check out my outside rear miror, tis Harley item.

Spin on oil filter from a 1275.

Battery cables modern stuff.

Hose clamps, modern stuff.

Electric fuel pump.

Air filters, custom.

Water and oil pressure guage. Later model, numbers are not filled in.

Carpet rather than that nasty rubber, had one of those, gesh.

Tires 155/80 size.

Who said orginal has to be orginal, needs to look orginal, only you guys know for sure.

Just ribbing ya a bit, Jack. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

Ms Agatha is far more original in application and intent than Tunebug will be once I'm done. We're taking a similar approach, though, with modifications that are, by an large, not detectable to most folks. Lots of different approaches out there, and as long as we're all having fun with them, it's all good!

All of which brings me to a question I've been wondering about. In the general Classic Car world, there seems to be 3 directions of effort;

1. Concours restoration: Getting the paint drips right, the clamps right, the tags right and everything in between for the true trailer queen show car. My unofficial observation suggests we can count the number of folk interested in this route on these boards on one hand - and have a few fingers left over.

2. Restomod: Making it look right outside but making it modern inside. We have a few of these and a few more if we include the "soup it up - modified crowd."

3. Very Pretty driver that goes to shows: This seems to be most of us. We want something we can use, we want something that will be admired, we want it to be right but we want to have fun.

My theory on why this is is fourfold.

A. These are still budget cars on which people can do budget restorations. I know budget is relative but it's still cheaper than a big healey or a Jag by a huge margin.

B. They aren't rare. So they haven't become the "trust" of professionals. Amateurs can still play with them.

C. they aren't sexy. (I know, I know) or at least they are only to us. Again, there is just more of a "cachet" to Big Healey's etc. (Had a friend in my Orlando club describe Midget owners as the pond scum of MG owners. Even at an MG party someone asked, "so when are you getting a "real" MG?" - meaning a TD/ TF/ etc. etc.

D. These boards attract like minded folk. In other words, this is a largely DIY/ driver's car board and attracts people who like that. (Although I've not seem many trailer queen - concourse Spridgets at shows ever.)

BTW I like I this way but I would love to hear your thoughts.

This describes me to a tee. I love the stock looks of the Bugeye, but love the power of a more modern engine.

My Bugeye looks bone stock, but has a newer motor. I plan on dressing the Datsun engine up a bit to make it look more stock though (i.e. paint it green, etc.).

Can you really see someone paying what we have into these for a 'concourse' car? Doubt it - they'd go big (Big Healey, Jag, etc ...). Resale just isn't there on our cars. But I doubt any of the reg's here are for resale - it's our toy / hobby / sickness.

Guys rag me here at work (which I should be doing rather than look @ BCF) that I am going to have the most expensive, best looking $4,000 car (invested $12k - that I'll admit to).

Make it for you. Some desire original, some reliable, etc ...

Simply put, I have owned all my Spridgets (7 over a 40 year span) because I am a DRIVER and I ENJOY driving!! These little cars are simply a JOY to drive, simple to work on and cheap to keep!! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/banana.gif /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/driving.gif /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/banana.gif /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/thumbsup.gif

Back to the original thread though, I have a "wood" dash that I like (purely a personal taste!) but it seems to me that a solid wood one (as the ebay dash looks to be) would be adding a fair bit of weight!! My wood dash is a veneer overlay over the original that was chosen as a different way of taking care of very ratty old vinyl!!

Addition to above.

I suspect that there are not a hole bunch of folks out there that are qualified to judge a Bugeye at Concours level even with a check list which I have not seen, but understand is available.

Healey Club, who let those guys in, gesh they charge bucks for the list.

However, there are a bunch of us that can walk by one and pick it to death easly most of the time. We have learned over the years to keep our mouths shut.

A nice Sunday driver is a car to behold and a joy forever.
