Keep the memories close. Truly sorry to hear you lost a friend, Tom. The only way we continue after we pass is through memories of our family and friends. He still lives as long as you remember. Some of the good ones are what you need to think on now. Smile at one or two. And wish him well.

Oh no doubt. They change names, but since no one can keep up, we all just say JNIC. Thats the letters still on the front of the building anyway.

So do you make up here ever? Even though I am without an LBC at this time, I spend enough time on VR and stealing the jokes from the humor section I owe you a pint.
 
I served 20 years in the Royal New Zealand Air Force during which I was attached to the Royal New Zealand Navy for 3 years maintaining and operating the Wasp helicopter off the back of a frigate.

You know what that list of THINGS is then! We (phlyin' photogs) had to be qual'd to drive about anything the USAF had in inventory... but when on TDY the motor pool NCOIC would NEVER let us have a simple Ford sedan! We always got the sway-back mounts. Once got a Dodge 6-by issued from MacDill to rumble TWO of us down to Homestead and back. Sadistic NCOIC! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif
 
I don't know about sadistic, but I do remember one young hotshot misusing one of my 5/4ton's by shifting without using the clutch. Word got back to me and I went out from the motor pool and found him. Being that those vehicles had transmission and clutch problems when being more careful, I "convinced" the youngster to exit through the drivers door window so we could discuss the situation. I never minded a problem from damage during legitimate use, but horseplay did not fly well. Oh, the young guy was more responsible after that and became one of my better drivers.
 
We never abused 'em. Just that we were "outta towners" most times therefore somewhat suspicious, methinks. Two young Sergeants in flight suits with a bunch of camera gear walk into your office, show you cards number one and three and request a vehicle...

I always wanted the 427 El Camino that the U-2 troops used for a chase vehicle. Drove a couple of them, and that must have been rough duty for the guys that did it all the time!

"What did you do at Bien Hoa, daddy?"
"Oh, about 10.4 seconds in the quarter mile."

To this DAY i've not seen one in ANY "civilian" footage. Saw a story on the "Military History" channel just days ago about "spook ships"... Plenty of U2 shots, just none of a completed landing.

IIRC it was Utapao where we'd take lawn chairs and a six pack outside the hooch, just before 0600. Sit down, crack a brew, hear the run-up and off it'd go. Count to 20 and it was outta sight. Good excuse fer breakfast, tho. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif
 
When I was at DM, my mother had come for a visit. I had her out on the ramp, showing her a "proper" aircraft, when one of the U-2's took off. This was before they all went to Beale.
She just stood there with her jaw hanging, watching the 45* climbout, and <u>still</u> talks about seeing it.
My house was in the pattern, and she would always stop and watch as one went over.
The A-7's didn't impress her as much.
