I second Kellysguy. Clean them up with some steel wool, then season them with some bacon grease. Veggie oil will work too, but tends to leave a sticky residue after getting cooked on. Bacon grease works the best. Keep some handy to wipe the grills down with while they're still warm after you give 'em a scrub when your done cooking. Very similar to caring for a cast iron pan.
I used it to cook on an old rusty truck hood and half of a rust 55 gallon drum. Everyone there said it was the best bacon they'd ever had...seriously. I seasoned it w/ the fat to get the rust off, then cooked the bacon on it over an open fire.
