Spitfire Battery Size for Spitfire 1500 and TR6

I've got a 1975 TR6 and a 1976 Spitfire 1500, and one old battery between them...time to power up!

All the literature I can find recommends a BCI Group Size 24 for both cars. Bought a 24 today and stuffed it in the Spitfire - it's a tight fit. Something an inch or so shorter might make me feel better about the bonnet clearance, and with reversed terminals I could attach the wires on the rear of the battery where they would be out of the way. I put a piece of 1" Styrofoam on top of the terminal/disconnect and closed the bonnet, it crushed about 1/4" when I forced it down, so I have about 3/4" clearance. That ~should~ be enough, but I hate to dent the rust in my beautiful rat rod...

I'm curious what you chaps with similar cars have in the way of batteries...searched the Forums with no useful results.

Thanks!

Jeff: My TR6 has a batt. which I believe is smaller than a gp. 24, which I always thought was overkill, and unnecessarily heavy. I'm not sure of the group no., but it may be "25"? It's a DieHard #32125, and measures 9'x6.5"x8.25"H. Cranks just fine.

Jeff,

I use a Group 26 battery in my Spitfire. It is a bit short compared to the bat-tery box but I'm happy with its fit. It dimensions are: 8-3/16H x 6-13/16 W x 7-3/4 H. I have it positioned with the terminal to the back, which puts the Neg to the outside.

I got tired of the cheap plastic battery box that was supposed to keep the battery shelf from corroding. So when my last battery gave out, like several others, I purchased an Optima battery because they are completely sealed. Supposedly can be mounted in any position. I got the model 34 because the store had one that only had the top posts and did not have the side terminals. https://www.optimabatteries.com/home.php

Yes it is expensive. But it would cost a lot more to repair an acid corroded battery shelf. And would especially be a pia to have to repair the shelf in my newly restored and painted engine bay.
