battery life

Okay, you guys have me investigating a new battery as mine is 8-9 years old. I took it out and it measures 12.5 volts and starts first time all the time. The specific gravity is perfect in 5 of 6 cell with the 6th only slightly down. So why am I changing it? I'd really like to wait till next spring. I'm taking it to Napa Auto store tomorrow to see what they think. Its an Interstate 800cca and I'd replace it with the same.
What are your thoughts?

They will sulphate.
I have been stranded with a battery that was perfect in the morning, buildup in the bottom of the case killed it when I parked.

There comes a point at which the plates will simply cease to function.

Have you done a load test?

You can do a hillbilly load test by disconnecting the primary wire to the distributor at the coil, place a voltmeter across the battery, place the voltmeter where you can read it, crank for 10 or 15 seconds, see what the reading is just before you let go the starter.

Less than 10 volts, toast.

:savewave:

TH will you please put that cottin picken worn out sulphated battery in the bin. Battery life with out a VDC Pulse type float charger with a desulphasion circuit in it and connected to the battery at all times the caris not in operation is about 3 -to- 4 years.--Keoke

Wait a minute!
I gots it figgered outs!

The Governator must have some new income stream producing tax on old Healey batteries, hence the reluctance to part with same!

Just drive around the lake to Nevada and change it there!

Good call---Keoke--
