battery helmet stuck on post help

My 6 volt batteries have seen there better days. I decided to change them. I can not for the life of me remove the battery helmets from the post. I have already destroyed one of the old batteries, after hours of cocking around. I've tried everything. They will not budge. I've tried the battery terminal lifter. That's all bent up now. I've tried prying, banging, lubricant etc What's a man to do? MK

The only thing you didn't mention is heat, but of course you'd have to be careful as the terminals are lead. Only thing I can think of is maybe drilling a small hole in the top of the helmet so you can get a penetrant--not lubricant--into the top of the terminal (I like Kroil, some like PBBlaster, etc.). Penetrants have ingredients to dissolve corrosion, which is probably your problem.

Besides leakage, I wouldn't worry about damaging the old batteries; they should still be good for cores

Forget heat. I would worry more about hydrogen gas in the battery than the lead. The small hole in the top sounds like a good idea, but don't they have a screw there?

There should be a small screw in the center of each "helmet" holding it to the post. If so I would suggest removing the screw before getting too energetic,.
