Battery charging during storage

I recently bought one of those little trickle chargers that you leave hooked up while the car is stored. Is it safe to leave one of these on when the car is under an outdoor type car cover? I just wonder if the hydrogen given off by the battery might be a danger.

paisano, I would not worry much as long as you keep the electrical cable away from any aqua. I keep mine connected all the time that I am not using my cars, one car is outdoors, if any gases accumulate they dissipate under the car anyway. Over here in the USA, Walmart is selling a charger-maintainer for $14.00 made by Black & Decker which does the job fine, and since I needed 2, it was a great deal.

I have a friend looking for an Alfa Romeo Sedan from the 1960's, 4-door, I think the model is the 1600 ?? Must be LHD, so I doubt he'll find one in Italy.

No do not leave a "trickle charger" hooked up to your battery. The type charger that is predominantly used in this application is; "A Float Type Charger"---Fwiw-Ciao--Keoke

Keoke is right, ( this time.. just kidding ! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/devilgrin.gif ).
This is one of those times when we need to understand the exact correct terminology;
1.. What we call a " trickle charger " should not be left connected to a battery for an extended period of time.
2.. A " battery maintainer " also known as a " float charger " is designed to be left connected to a battery for long term storage.
Make certain you have # 2 for long term storage purposes and not # 1.

I probably didn't call it the right thing - it is definitely a charger built specifically for hooking up long term. I had a look at the posts on the MG forum. Thanks for the help.
