After 40 years - Fawlty Towers returns -

Whil(st) on a cruise last fall I was treated to a few episodes of a very recent sitcom with Mr Cleese in it (the title was something about sunset?) His body may be starting to show his age (no more silly walks or pratfalls), but his timing and Sahara-dry delivery are still spot on.

If he were not involved, I'd expect a disaster worse than the Night Court reboot. (Apologies to anyone enjoying that one, but... HOW??)

I was on a vacation in Nova Scotia back in the early 70s.
Our cabin in Peggy's Cove had a TV and saw my first Faulty Towers episode.
Everywhere else we stopped we insisted on having a TV.
Nothing since has ever compared to the brilliance of that series.
I can't imagine that those shows can be topped in today's politically correct climate.

How can you even have Night Court without Markie Post? Maybe I should have asked why.

Indeed!

My wife and I were discussing last night (rather than paying attention to it) and I concluded that the original series was built as a vehicle for Harry Anderson, who already had a career as a stand-up comic / magician (illusionist). He was there to be wacky. Melissa Rauch has comedic range, but "wacky" is a little beyond her reach.

Also, all of the characters (except for Markie Post's and the court clerk) were decidedly "off" in some way. In this reboot, they're all just so bland.

I take comedy WAAAAY too seriously sometimes.

Saw a "Night Court" listed in the guide and went to it. That lasted about 90 seconds.

So spot on. 👍

Sad but true. But with Cleese, we may get a surprise. I hope so.
