Basic carb system question

Hello All,
I have a question that will most likly seem basic to you guys. Why is it when I remove The plumbing between the valve cover and my strombergs the idle instantly goes up and the car seems to run MUCH better. I would leave it undone however, I spits a bit of oil and at least once I got a "back fire" out of my carbs through the lines. I'm sure that this is the gas recycle to the carbs but should I add an in line breather?
Is this a sign of a bigger problem?
Thanks Ya'll

Yep, thats the one. Please see attached photo.

When you un-plug that line you've caused a major vacuume leak. If the car is running better with a leak, then I would re-evaluate the carb settings. It may be running too rich. I would not reccomend adding an inline breather, or disconnecting the lines.
The PCV system is one of the few emission devices on the TRs that I agree with. It really does help the engine.
