Tahoe -- it's an early Phase 2 car, built I recall in December 1964. BMC had switched over to the larger lenses for the clear parking lights up front and the brake lights in the back, but hadn't added the amber flashers up front, and in the back I still have small reflectors. The switch-over to the Phase 2 suspension came a little bit before the change over to separate flashers. I always thought it was a really small number, but I keep seeing cars like mine, so probably several thousand.

Thanks for the comments on the color! Technically, you could have ordered that color combination in 1964/65, at least according to the nice folks at the Heritage Trust. Not that I can confirm that anyone actually *did* so.

My 65 has the same front turn signals as yours. They must have switched to the additional amber in 65 as my serial # is a couple of hundered lower than the notes in the moss parts catalog for the amber. Mine was " dispatched " in March of 1965.

Hi Gang, according to Anderson and Moment, the BJ8 was first produced with the single/combination light in October 1963. but it was the larger light than the BJ7 and it had a plastic lens. Then in March 1965, car no. B.76138, the separate running and signal lights were installed, using the larger plastic lens as well.
I also read somewhere that the motiation for the change was to match the production details of the European cars which had been getting the separate lighting treatment ever since the BJ7's as my car shows.
 
I disagree. The early BJ8's, phase 1 to 26705, had the same single/combo light as the BJ7's. It is the glass "beehive" Lucas model 594. Clear in the front and red in the back. From 26705, plastic lens were used, clear, amber & red.

Here we go again, time for the annual B-J hoopla. What's exciting about watching an auction company make a bundle exploiting our hobby? Personally, I think many of the over-restored over-"provenenced", no-reserve cars at this auction are bought by shills or the owners themselves. Sure, they dump a bundle in buyer and seller fees to B-J, but what they get is a documented (maybe even on the Speed Channel) record that their car sold for a fortune.

I went to B-J two years ago and found the whole spectacle very hard to take. Not only were the cars overpriced, but so to is the food, general admission, and the tacky automobilia (I can't believe how many $3000 base coat/clear coat gas pumps and 59 Cad fin couches I saw).

I have collected and restored cars for almost 40 years and B-J made my skin crawl. What happened to buying a neglected old car at a reasonable price, fixing it up, and using it to have fun and preserve its memory and history? At B-J the whole process is inverted. The more you spend, the better.

Yes, it is fun to look at the cars in the field and kick tires and talk to other car nuts. But it's hard to pay much attention to that with the screaming auctioneers and bidders going bananas each time a bid tops another $100K.

I salute B-J for coming up with such a clever scheme to rake in a fortune -- it wouldn't work without enough suckers with too much money and a bunch of over restored cars to fuel it.

ps don't get too excited about Healeys selling for 70K at B-J. At B-J, you could probably sell a golf cart with a Boyd Coddington paint job for 100K, 70K cars are just warm up strippers in that venue.

I got more excited over Marv getting 20 k for the 100 M ON EBAY that was in pieces than B-J getting 70 k for a BT7.

I have body # 75870 made in Feb 65 . It has the large clear plastic lens in the front. The single red tail/stop/turn assemblies in the back with the red reflectors.....
Perhaps the early front clear lenses were smaller and made of of glass ? Don't know. Mine look like this car:

Your bang on! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/iagree.gif When people see prices like this no one will want to drive their cars because they'll be to scared about deflating the value! So in the end all you get is a bunch of trailer queen cars that no one get's to see. I've got a friend with a rare Shelby GT convertible with 18 actual miles. Probably worth a couple hundred thousand.It sits in his garage only to be viewed by special friends after their belt buckles are removed. Does that sound like fun? Give me a rusty Healey thats a good runner anyday!!!!!

It's fun to see other people bid up a BJ8, so that we can pretend that ours just tripled in value. But for most of us here, who drive our cars for fun and to remind us we're still alive, it's not our reality. I have the same issue with those guys who come to shows with their perfect trailored cars. I can never win, because I have a driver, with dirt, stone chips and the occassional scratch. But mine is real. I suppose that I can always put it under glass one day and stare at it, but that's not why I have it and I never plan to change. So let B-J sell those BJ8s for $100k and make my wife feel better. It's not my BJ8 up there looking shiney and perfect. Mine is the one parked in the lot, with the road dirt and chips. No hard feelings.

"golf cart" only got 40thou. it appears to me that each running of a b.j.auction attains additional "cheezy-ness".originaly the auction contained such rare models as ducatis,cords,duzzy's,aurburns, etc,cars most of wich were either privately owned,or that had been in museums,some were dismantled or reconfigured during w.w. II,to keep them from being captured,for the most part the general public had never heard of these,let alone seen them,yes even then the prices were way beyond the reach of the average joe,but that didnt mean we were unable to appreciate the history, craftsmanship,and science that brought these autos into being!.now we see plastic repros,and clones selling in excess of 100thou.today the "cheez" is trully thick!i would be surprised if at the next auction they have a "geek" tent with associated "barker" and the new girls recently being featured on stage in thier tight little "t" shirts begin selling lap dances.pt.barnum would be proud indeed. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/pukeface.gif

Shorn, you might be right about the glass behive light on the very early BJ8's. I looked up the chapter in Anderson and Moment and it said the time frames for the light conversions, which is what I stated. I Assumed that all the single light configurations on the BJ8's were the larger plastic lens because that is what Mad River's car is showing on his attached pic. Actually I have never seen a BJ8 with the single light configuration, be it plastic or glass. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cheers.gif
By the way, I agree with the majority here about, B-J. I do watch it, but it is pretty sickening. Fools and their money are soon parted. Including myself, if I had enough money to do it.
