TR2/3/3A Balancing Wire Wheels...

Hey y'all,

my TR is back on the road and I am having the hardest time getting my rims balanced. Or I guess I should say no shops have done a good job balancing them. Any tricks I can try on my own? I can't go above 50 MPH without feeling like something is going to rattle off.

I took my wire wheels to a shop that I use and they had never, ever mounted tires on or balanced wire wheels. I gave them this Moss article and they came out perfect at all speeds. The kid doing the work had absolutely no idea, but once he read the article he went to their warehouse and pulled out the old adapters and did a great job.

First off the wheels need to be spun without tires on the car to see if they are true . If tubes aren't installed carefully they can be pinched and cause a flat spot on the tire when mounted. A square wheel / tire assembly can still be balanced but won't roll for crap. I use an old Atlas bubble balancer which works just fine.

That Moss article is perfect! I'll bring it next week when I go back. I saw the tech put it in the vice the incorrect way (according to the article). Thanks! I'll post an update.

Good Luck on finding any shop that has the correct adapters. I tried all over Grand Island, Lincoln, and Omaha, and no one had them. I did find one place in Lincoln, that said they could do it, but put one of my wheels on there balancer, and said without having the wheels trued up, and spokes tightened, that it would do no good to balance them. I ended up buying new wire wheels, and balanced them myself on a bubble balancer, and they are smooth as glass now.
