Badges-- what's the significance?

Over the many years and many British cars I've owned I've never really learned the significance of the badges that folks have on their cars. I inherited one from one of my MG's and am thinking of putting it on my triumph but I know little of their history of significance. I could be running a badge that says I want your sister or something.

Badges can show club membership, emergency roadside assistance organisations, societies and even places of employment or membership of a particular military regiment. They were rather like bumper stickers or those sticker-type US Marines badges that you see so often, only rather more permanent. Which badge do you have?
 
I'll have to describe it after I take a good look (or pic)-- looks like one of those classic types in the parts catalogues-- nothing with any such words, more like a crest
 
When I bought my TR3, the previous owner had three badges on it...I'm not a big fan of badges, and one of them I'd just assume take off (4 cyl club -- but it's really wedged on there.) The other two are pretty cool -- one is a circular US Flag, and the other is a Laguna Seca badge.

You can also see many badges on eBay which might help explain a particular badge. Do a search for car badges. I bought some rare Engish ones. RAF Society and a hard to find Royal Corps of Signals. There are also car badge books and many people collect these badges as a hobby.

I didn't want to say Ferrari, because I've never owned one...didn't want to make anyone mad. If Porsche guys were miffed, I could at least say "I owned a '70 911T and really liked it -- so just poking fun at myself."
 
The one I have is round with RAC in the middle and a crown on top. Kinda chromey and colorful. Royal auto club?

That's a good one...very standard among British car owners.
