Bad noises

Pipe fit is probably a bit loose. Not that hard to pull it off. Maybe 1.5 - 2" deep on the pie to header. Outer pipe only had no slots.

I added one slot tonight to try and get the outer pipe to clamp better.
 
Just may work, I would have added two but maybe that is overkill.

Did you test the job?
 
I did a brief test, and no good yet. I'll do a better job at it tomorrow and hopefully that will do the trick.
 
What a muffler shop will do for you will fix it, but it will take a hacksaw to ever get it apart again.

They will weld it.

All the years doing headers, if they did not come with flanges on the output, we welded them on.

Slip the bolted-together flange on with no gasket, assemble the pipes, weld both sides, unbolt, slip apart, and put the gasket in.

If that's where it's coming from, two choices for a permanent fix.
One comes apart, one doesn't.

Thanks for the detailed info. I'm still going to see if I can do anything with what I have on there, but it's good to know what the permanent fix will likely be.
 
I know it's exasperating.

I wonder if some muffler cement on the pipe and then two clamps will do it.

The real frustrating part is knowing that I probably can't fix it myself. Sometimes that's just the way it is.

I tried the muffler cement, but just with the one clamp. May try the double clamp as well, or may just break down and get the car to a shop for a more permanent fix.
 
I mention this to Drew, I asked him if the exhaust pip was slid into the header collector, if so that was always going to leak, it needs to be the exhaust pipe sliding over the header collector. What a good exhaust shop will do for Drew is get a very close slip fit, I would recommend band clamps too, they will not deform the pipe like a U bolt style clamp making it easier in the future to remove if you should have to. The exhaust shop may or my not have the band clamps, but you can get them from any hot rod supplier like Jegs or Summit.
 
I do have the pipe over the header collector, it's just not a particularly tight fit. I'm going to try to pop by the exhaust shop after work today and see what they have for options.
 
Drew a good exhaust man will be able to use the pipe spreader and just bump it, until he gets a good snug fit.
 
I measured last night, and a 1-3/4" pipe is really what I should be running, so I'm going to go ahead and replace everything back of the header. Just need to do it right.
