Just got a call from wife. Son of family friend just kill himself.

Man,that hits hits you when you hear things like that.
I hope the family is able to cope with their loss.

All you can do is be a friend to this friend. Not much else you can do. So sorry to hear this. Parents should never have to bury their child.

Sorry boss, that well,,, you know. Rough, brings back sad memories

That's just terrible news....
I can't imagine how the family feels.
It changes how you look at life...
Makes you want to call your own kids and tell them
"you love them"

I've been that family. All you can do is be there for them. And don't tell them you know how they feel, because unless you have lost a child, you haven't got a clue.

Sorry to hear.

Can't imagine. Horrible news.

Not much one can say... I feel for the family.

Very sorry to hear that, Bas.

Similar thing happened here last year. Nothing but sad.

Condolences to family and friends.

So tragic. I can't imagine the desperation the son felt to take that action and now the family's despair.
Can only wish for them to pull through this eventually.

That's terrible! I feel awful for the family and of course you Basil, since you know them so well.

Just had a 17 year old girl, a high school senior, take a bunch of sleeping pills and go and lie down on the train tracks near here at 3am. A train did the rest.

She left no note, no indications of anything wrong, seemed perfectly normal. Right before prom as well.

What prompts these youngsters to do this? Ack!

Who knows?

Slidell middle school kid shot himself in class in '89 or '90 IIRC. Yeah, I know, sounds like a Pearl Jam song. First time I heard it I wondered if it was about him. It was either at Boyet or Clearwood. Only thing I remember was he was younger and it was on the other side of towm.

From what I've heard from friends who lost children in any type of tragitity, the parents always blame themselves.

Sorry to hear the bad news. Happened to my friend about a year ago. Family may never really recover.

The tragic thing about all of this, is there is no way anyone can relieve the suffering of a depressed person, no matter what it is caused by, medicines and talk therapy are often useless and most times make the problems worse. A depressed person wakes up every day and wonders if this is the day they will have the courage to either change their life or end it. Worst case for them is they don't have the courage to do either. Sometimes they can find pleasure of accomplishing something to make someone happy or appreciate the care or contribution they made. Mostly it's just the same day in day out, of feeling like you are just wasting oxygen by just existing, feeling invisible, incompetent and afraid of trying something that might backfire and have the result of making life worse for you or those who care for or about you.

Very sorry Bas.

This is a condition I'm all-too famliar with. Not trying to marginalize the horror of this particular incident, not being cold... but it frustrates and confounds me completely that someone would be compelled to end their existence due to it. I'm very familiar with the condition, have had a number of what I consider to be close friends afflicted. ALL those guys have been well above average in intelligence, we were drawn into friendships as a result of that. Two have Masters' degrees in electronics engineering, two are medical PhD's, one has a Masters in criminology... many a frank discussion over the malady with each of them at various times. Only one has gone into the abyss, all been or being medicated, and all have undergone batteries of treatments and therapies over years. It makes both my head and my heart ache. I'm no cockeyed optimist by a long shot, but to contemplate checking out voluntarily due to my mind playing me for a mug seems a fool's errand. Chemotherapy seems to moderate some of the condition but comes with other nasty consequences. Diagnosing/recognizing it before things get to the critical point seems to be about all one can do to prevent a catastrophe, and those afflicted usually have an ability to mask it from all around them. All too frustrating. And sooo very sad. Particularly in this case, as a young person has been lost before having a chance at really living. The family's grief is likely overwhelming.
