BAD ENGINE PING

Just had a complete overhaul on a 1500 engine (1980), now we have a very bad engine ping. Anyone know the timing setting or is there a trick to eliminate the ping. The manuel says 10 BTCD, but at that setting the pinging is worst than bad.

Are the plugs too hot? If not, retard the timing by turning the distributor little by little until the ping goes away. As you retard the timing you will need to readjust the idle as it will get lower with the timing adjustment. You could have a fuel mixture problem as well and you need to check your plugs after to get the timing adjusted.

Are you using highest octane gas?If not you'll crack a piston.Thats a possibility too the distributor, give it a turn little by little.Sounds like(with the long extension on my ear)like preignition. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grouphug.gif
