Back yard screech owl

Pretty cool how nature gave them the power of silent flight .
living in MN long ago I remember standing at the kitchen window having coffe at just day break and seeing something on the fresh snow under the ash tree couldn't figure out what I was seeing until a breeze made it move .
it was fluffy light..
saw more fall to the ground
an owl was finishing off a feast of the rabbit 20 feet up . I'm sure was one of the ones eating my bushes
enjoy master of the night sky.

Had a close encounter with an owl in the English Lake district a few years ago. It was all too quick to tell what sort of Owl.

The cottage we were staying in had a large window overlooking the Fells. As it was getting dark we heard a bang as a small bird flew at the window and dropped, stunned, onto the window ledge. A second later an owl swooped in and took it away.

Our little friend is back in that exact same perch today. Didn't see him at all yesterday so guessed he had found "greener pastures" but here he is again. Waiting to see if he stays all day again.

At breakfast yesterday we noticed this little fellow about 12 feet up in a pine tree in our back yard. From the house couldn't be sure whether he was a bird or just some clutter fallen from the pecan trees next door. Went out and walked all around the base of the tree and he didn't move except to keep an eye on me. So I took a couple of photos that turned out not clear enough due to the long zoom. Finally middle of the afternoon I got the tripod out and got this photo and a few more on 12 power zoom. The little guy just sat there watching me. Apparently he is fearless or maybe knows I'm too old to climb a tree. Finally just at dark he took off probably looking for a mouse for dinner. My neighbor a a pretty good bird guy. He thinks it is an Eastern Screech Owl. He showed me some photos and it sure looks right.

Well, you missed your acceptance letter to Hogwarts.....and he waited ALL day for you to figure it out! :D

Many years ago, a yellow warbler flew into an open window of our house pursued by a Saw Whet Owl not much bigger than the warbler. My brother and I managed to shoo the warbler back outside but the little owl just sat there staring at us. I went over and actually picked him up, spoke briefly to him and let him go out the window. Bird books describe these owls as "absurdly tame". That's the only one I ever saw - and that was about 1949. BTW, that hawk shown earlier is a Cooper's Hawk - a fearsome predator of small birds and a true chicken hawk.

Back again yesterday but on a different but close branch this time. He seems to spend alternating days in my pine tree and the others somewhere else.
