Hi all. I was getting to be a regular reader and poster while working on my 71B a year or so ago; then I lost my job and was out of work (and money) for 9 months. :-( Clearly I wasn't working on the car so I sorta fell out of the LBC loop waiting for a better day.

And it's here! Now that I'm working again I'd like to get started doing little things on my B. The good news is that it picked the first task for me: carb rebuild! I fired the car up a few weeks ago and found fuel pouring out of the vent tube from the charcoal canister. My best guess is a stuck float and I figured that if I was going to be taking the carbs apart I might as well do the rebuild while I'm there. I'm planning on stopping at Moss on the way home and picking up the kit but I want to make sure that I get the right stuff so here's my questions:

-What's the difference between the Master Rebuild Kit (375-558) and the Rebuild Kit (375-398 in the case of my AUD550 HIF-4's)?
-Is there anything I should be picking up in addition to the video, manual, kit, needles and new mounting gaskets? Most notably, should I replace the floats or just clean up what I've got?

Thanks for your help. I'm excited to get my hands dirty after a year away.

Great news Gabe. Being out of work is never easy.
I too, have a '71 which is in storage now, but comming home in a month I hope.
Good luck and welcome back.

Paul

I really need to start saving some money... If I was out of work for more than a month... I'd probably lose everything I owe money on. (house, truck, etc) and given the cutback of overtime at work, it's already looking bleak.

But congrats on the new job, and welcome back!

Gabe - glad you're up & running again - now to get the B in the same condition

Whatever you do, buy an original SU rebuild kit - don't get an aftermarket one....call Joe Cuerto & ask him about what he recommends...but, were it me, I'd go for the master kit & redo jets at same time

Thanks for the welcome back guys and for the tip Tony. Since I drive right past the Moss east coast warehouse on my way home, I'm going to stop in and get the Rebuild Kit (375-398), new floats and as much educational material as I can about it. The rebuild kit does include new jets and needles. Additionally, I've found several SU rebuild stories that included problems with reusing the original floats so I'm definitely going to get new ones. Other than that, I'm just hoping to avoid the master rebuild with the bushings and all for now; if that ends up being needed, I'll take a ride out to Long Island to Joe Curto sometime since I don't have the means to do that work correctly.

I work about a mile from Moss Motors in NJ.
It can be very hard on the old credit card.
One of my favorite things to do is to read all the stuff for sale on their bulletin board (posted by customers).

And, reminder for all you east-coasters.....BritFest (supported by Moss) is coming up here in NJ on May 6 (I'll be at a race at Pocono or I'd be there).

American Express loves me! My Moss bill every month is between $6,000 & $10,000! Heck, with the recent increase on my card level, I can now buy a new car with my AMEX!Used it at Lowe's today & it wouldn't scan because of bad magnetic strip - called AMEX...new card will be here Monday (they want me to keep using it, I guess.)

Glad to see I'm not the only one with a habit to feed. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif I actually decided *against* stopping in at Moss today once I realized I was spending nearly as much to do a partial rebuild myself as I would be to have Joe Curto do it. I'm going to take the carbs off the car and clean them up - hopefully that'll do it for the float. Otherwise, I'm just going to have it done right.

Being at Britfest is my goal this year; I was still trying to pass NJ emissions last year but finally gave in and got a Collector's Vehicle sticker in June. Shortly after that, I had it tuned up at MGT's and it ran great all fall and winter but clearly that tuning is long gone with the float issues.
