Back to the Drawing Board

I'll have to get one. If the gasket is blown, Donald and Bruce want to look at it as it comes apart.
 
The following reply is from my friend Ken...who is just finishing a frame off restoration on a beautiful 72 TR6.

"The top of the TR6 radiator is over 3" below the top on the thermostat housing and 1" below the top of the front of the cylinder head. When you fill the radiator, the system is not really full. The areas of cylinder head exposed to air heat up quickly above the boiling point of the coolant & steam forms. The temp gauge sensor reads the temp of the steam, the gauge reads hot even though most of the coolant is still cool. The steam pressurizes the system & escapes out the radiator cap overflow and shows up as a steam reservoir bottle. It can take several heat up and cool down cycles before all the air is purged out the overflow and replaced by coolant from the reservoir during cool downs.
Therefore, I think your problem may be self correcting.
I added a second radiator cap and fill neck on top of the thermostat housing, so the system can really be filled."

First few trips with the recently restored car...and no temp issues.
