I have a spare iggy switch. To remove the current one requires a drill, an Eeze-Out and a level of gymnastic ability I don't have the inclination to attempt just now. "Break-away" bolt in a REALLY awkward location. I ~thought~ I'd pull the steering wheel and do *nice things* for the switch cluster, but that wheel seems to be welded on. Lotsa Blaster and some time...
Had to walk away before I got after it with a HEAT-WRENCH!!!! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/eek.gif
 
Thats the great thing about your climate! Always best to walk away before resorting to ye old gas axe.

PS would be nice if you could fit a univeral switch first before going to gymnastics school.
 
I may just plug the replacement into the harness and tie wrap it to the column for a while to "test" whether or not the one in situ NEEDS replacing. We'll see. A few days' soaking in PB Blaster hasn't let me down yet.
 
Doc, this is something I had to do in one of my Capris, what
I did was take a die grinder with a mini cutting wheel on it
and slotted the remains of the bolts, this was after I removed
the column, and clamped it in the bench vise...

I ~may~ try an' loosen it to rotate it to a more accessable angle but the LAST thing I care to do is yank that thing outta th' car and wrassle it to the ground. Usually a "left-twist" bit does the job. Done many a Porsche Audi iggy switch and a few other models like that. I know for sure it'll get replaced with an Allen head cap screw!

Whole column lock thing is just a way to justify increased revenues IMO anyway. Thieves don't go tryin' to fiddle a switch/lock out with sockets 'n screwdrivers...

Doc. The break off bolts are so the guy down at the dealership doesn't get carried away and collapse the steering column as he puts in a new switch. Take a center punch and push the bolts around with it. they loosen in less than two turns usually, and then a pair of needle nose pliers will do the rest. Hope this helps. OOPS! Forgot, drink a large glass of Chardonnay first, just to calm your nerves of course!

Only ~ONE~ bolt, been there thirty-plus years... Ain't got up th' 'nads to tap it yet, but I suspect yer right: "One Good Whack" an' the silly thing will give o'er.

...jus' gotta decide how I'll replace it. Allenhead (so far) seems to be my first *best* choice. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif
 
I *never* have a left-handed twist drill when I need one.

As a consequence, I've learned how to sharpen normal (rh) drills backwards, and use them "in a pinch".
Works great. Of course, the flutes are the wrong direction, but it's not like you're drilling real deep anyway: usually after it starts to drill in, the bolt "catches" and spins out nicely.

I have to take the steering lock out of the Twin-Cam Escort soon (race rules)....I've already got a "wrong ways" drill sharp and ready.
