Well... Right at the peak of crisis, every computer in our house got hit with various "Security center" viruses and I've been mainly offline for a week! So finally today I plugged in the spare computer and I'm back. Now I gotta boot the old unit in Linux and retrieve what I can before I wipe out the HD and get that unit back. Oh joy! SO now I'm off to a fun fulled day of computa-fixage.. my favorite!(NOT!) Wanna come over Doc? I'll keep the CAB flowin'!
Added incentive.. It's a whole 5 Deg F here this AM.

That virus has gotten into our system at school. Man what a headache!! How do you make people understand that you NEVER click the button on a pop-up?
Welcome back BTW

I never click on pop-ups. I think where I found it was on a picture site. I was researching my old boat motor, and it took me to a lot of out of the way sites and obscure data.. I'm pretty sure it was just embedded in one of the sites, and when I clicked on it it got in. My wife's laptop, I'm quite sure hers came from Facebook.
All the anti-virus stuff we've got.. no good! I need to go MAC, or Linux! Jeesh!

Our main computer crashed right before Christmas....a link from FB....I was having all kids of problems after installing and playing a game called Reno slots..so I removed myself from all FB apps and it has cleared up. My husband did the same. I don't do any of the "games" on FB anymore and I have really been warning people about some of those FB apps....they are not as secure as people think.

I agree Terri! not secure at all. My wife really dosn't do any of the games either.. just posts ant keeps up with friends, but I think there's still a lot of "crud" linked into that site.

It's a prime vehicle for those things, too many naive people.

C'mon Benny, LINUX just works. Whole lot less money than a Mac setup, too... Where's th' isue?!?!

Ben you need to get and use Malwarebytes Anti-Malware software. My neighbor got hit with one of these extortion viruses and I could not uninstall it manually because it blocked off access to certain programs needed to do this. I installed Malwarebytes and it cleaned up the viruses and made the computer run much faster to boot. Can't say enough about this software, plus its free.
I have no interest in this company but am an enthusiastic user of this very good product.

Malwarebytes is good, it gets loaded onto clients' machines here. TrendMicro's site is my fist "go-to" for infected machines tho.

Yup.. Already got malwarebytes. and super anti-spyware and Avast, and MS security essentials, and the old computer had McAfee! these new "Security center" viruses usually go after the Mbam.exe file that is malwarebytes executable file, thus rendering it usless. on the wifeys computer we ran avast, then MS, then super, and then it was able to run malwarebytes. knocked out most of the viruses symptoms, but its a "root" virus. it's still in there. those programs cant wipe it out completely.
Linux.. I've got the disc... just need a good free afternoon to do it. No other problem Doc! hehehe.

Have you run TrendMicro's on-line bug hunter? "House Call". XP in "safe mode with networking" and run it at least twice.

McAfee stinks. I was never happy with it, then when it expired it was like an adware program in and of itself.

I got a couple of infected files (purposely) and tested a couple of different programs with them. The only one that seemed foolproof and instant was Kaspersky. I got sucked into the big facebook virus and clicked on an emailed link, Kaspersky killed it about as fast as I clicked on the link.

My only big complaint right now about Kaspersky is it's almost over-eager to kill stuff. I've had a few false-positives about keyloggers and it gets real paranoid when something new tries to work into the guts of the OS.

My big complaint with McAfee was how badly it slowed down my computer. It had to monitor everything and took forever on my poor old system.. Hmmm. Kaspersky. Have to look at that one.

That's a complaint with all of them. MS.SE seems to be an exception, but whether it's that great a product or not remains to be seen.

This is for everyone: as for the "security center" popup nonsense, if you're not running Firefox with adblocker go get it now. I haven't seen one of those things on any of my machines

Ben: I got one of the FB virus in my machine and tried all the usual
anti-this and anti-that in my machine. Paid for software except Spybot.
None of the them recognized the stupid "pest ware program"

I downloaded Microsoft® Windows® Malicious Software Removal Tool (KB890830)
for the MS site- disconnected my computer from the cable, and ran the MS tool.
Upon reboot-the FB pest was gone and has stayed gone. A bunck of other stuff was removed also.

It took me 3 days to get my machine clean. I must admit I made it worse.
I clicked an ad for a malware scan. Lots of nasties hustled into my machine.

best of luck,

dale

What ever you do stay away from Symantac - Norton rite Doc?
It came on my computer when it expiered I tried to re move it. What a mess.

yeah, I like Symantec's version of Mr. Norton's AV warez about as much as I like lumpy gravy.

Can't be worse than the mustache hairs from the lunch lady in our old school's gravy. What's up with that anyway???? Seems to be a prereq.

GYaah! hahahahahahahaha! you're all warped! hahahahahaha. Runnin Firefox now, was on explorer. Thanks for all the advice everybody. every bit helps. Dale, I saw the MS melicious removal tool download when I added the Security Essentials, Guess I'll go back and get that too. can't hurt.
No symantec.. no Norton.. been there. McAfee aint much better. Inlaws just got Kaspersky, said it nailed those same viruses I had. maybe I'll look into that a bit more.
