Back in the Game!

Hello from the great State of Texas (the beautiful Hill Country). After decades of "drought" from MGA ownership I am back in the game with a recently purchased '56 1500. How the prices have changed!! Had 2- 57's at various times while living in San Diego, where top down was almost a 24/7 case. The first as a Naval Officer in SD which I used back and forth to my Base (which was not that frequently since I spent many months in WESTPAC +). Had to sell because the first child came along; wife did not think putting the car seat on the luggage rack was a good idea. About the price change: sold it for $400 in 1969! Today that does not buy 4 tires! Second one bought in '84 from a B of A VP. Was parked in his parking lot with a "for sale" sign on it . Actually, the sign I saw (which no one else could see, said (BUY ME!!) Back in the game again but did re-learn how much time you spend with the mechanic!! I was born in NYC where we could not drive until 18 so cars were not part of our growing up as it was for most of y'all. Thus, never did much under the hood except check the oil. Fortunately, I have a neighbor who is a collector (has a pristine MB 190 +) and who has spent most of his 70 years "under the hood", and loves to work on the A. Love to learn so looking forward to the Forum interactions. Ron

P.S.: do your think wire wheels will enhance look and/or value?

Welcome to BCF, Ron! That's a lovely MGA you have there! As for whether changing wheels - have you looked into Minilite wheels? I've always thought they look great on the MGA.

No, like and will check. Wonder if Moss conversion kit needed for this change. Wire wheels need because rear axle is about 7 /8 wider with disc wheels. Will save about $1K.

Did check for wheels. found many for different cars but 1500 MGA came up, no results found. Any ideas? thx, R

I’m not an MG guy myself… you might post your questions in our MG forum / more likely to get replies there.

Hey, Ron -
Love the hill country; aunt and uncle lived in Comfort and we visited often back in the 50s & 60s.

You won't need any conversions with Minilites and similar wheels. Just need to be careful with width and offset. Check out member Hap Waldrop's wheel offerings. He's great for tech advice as well:

New here, how do I find Hap Waldrop? Width of axle is the wire problem, thus the con. kit. Hope Hap can answer definitely about Minilite. thx, Ron

Mickey posted a link to Hap’s web page in his reply.

Welcome! great car and for what it is worth I love steel rims and hubcaps - increasingly they are the unique and period solution.
