Ya, know, there's always something, as Rosanne Rosanadana used to say.

Took the car back out on the highway and to show Erik the work and it was much less crowded than earlier, so I wanted blow some of the carbon out from sitting in the body shop for two months.

So I decide to wind it up a little and everything is great until I got to 65MPH. It was like switch flipped on and the vibrations came in from both the front and the rear of the car simultaneously. That's is the only thing that I'm disappointed with and I will be calling discount tire tomorrow after I dig out the invoice. They were supposed to be high speed balanced and are great up until 65, but I didn't go any higher with that shaking going on.

I have been following your post on your car with lots of interest to see where it all would lead to finally. first, the mirrors as a resto-mod are actually very, very nice but then again your car is not a concourse restoration but actually an improved version of what could have been should it maybe had enjoyed some sort of modern German re-engineering...love what you have done, now enjoy it in good health and please keep sending those pictures. I do check daily

Thanks for the compliments. If the weather cooperates this weekend, I hope to have some taken outside, but only if the dash replacement project doesn't start Friday. I will then be refurbishing my gauges over the weekend for a dash reinstall on Monday.

I also just spoke to tech support at Discount Tire and the support guru said that I may need what is called a "hub centric ring" that fits in the back of the wheel and prevents the exact vibration that I have happening. As soon as I described the problem, he had this answer, but wants to verify the answer with another tech guy who sells a lot of Triumph wheel & tire packages.

RI State Trooper: I see you've gone to great lengths to make everything look perfect- proof of insurance card please.

Paul: Yeah-these new mirrors are the latest addition. They were silver but I had them painted when the car was damaged this summer to match the overall effect-you can follow it in my website.

RI State Trooper: Yeah-I like the effect of color co-ordinating everything on the car to give it a balanced harmony. I see you've even kept one of our vintage inspection stickers in the OEM yellow-sign this summons to appear please.

Paul: I was waiting for the new stickers to come out in the right shade of yellow but the DMV said it wouldn't re-issue the color until 2018-you can see in all in my website.

The car looks perfect Paul-had to find something that was not up to snuff!
I am putting some band aids on my diff crossmember to limp through the next few weeks before another layup-hopefully we can get that long overdue cruise in.

Believe it or not, it's been in the shop since the accident when it expired a week later. That's how long this has been going on.

In order to protect myself from that very thing, I have an appointment at County Motors, Pawtucket, RI at 2:00PM Friday, October 17, for a RI State Inspection. It is officially on their schedule as of 10:00AM this morning.

I heard about the rear end issue this afternoon when I was at Erik's. Sorry that is a problem. I guess that you have plenty of power to the rear wheels now.

Yep-kind of a good news/bad news situation. We weren't quite sure how much we had increased the power since I had only driven the car about 20 miles before we starting tearing down the powerplant.While I was through the break-in, I was still taking it relatively easy on things in deference to age and all. When my nephew launched the clutch and hit the gas with the light flywheel we apparently tore through the crossmember like it was paper-3 out of 4 sides were tore clean apart.
Going to do a temporary patch to it tomorrow and lay it up next month to do it right-most likely going to order Rat-co's crossmember and take off the body to check over/brace everything for next season.Do hope we can get in a run or two while it is still temperate around here.

Paul, The car looks fantastic! The wheels really fill in nicely and the mirrors look great. Best of luck with it. Will we see you in Buzzards Bay at the CCBCC British Legends on Oct. 26th?

Hubcentric Rings would certainly be advised if the hub-bore of the wheels is larger diameter than the hub-snout on the axle/hub assy. The origianl TR6 wheels are lug-centric but do mate properly to the hub snout but they were steel. Very few aluminum wheels adequately seat perfectly for high speed use when strictly centering by the lugs even with proper torquing whether tapered or shouldered lugs. Pull one of them off and get your measuring calipers and measure the snout diameter closest to the mounting face of the hub. Then measure the hub bore of the wheels. If there is a difference then rings would help.

Here is a guy who I've had make up custom rings in the past. He uses polycarbonate rather than aluminum so they'll never stick to any part of the set-up and are virtually indestructable.

It's quite amazing what these little pieces of plastic can do for vibration. Solved my problem 100% w/ my 17" BMW BBS wheels and I've needed them on several other vehicles as well.
 
The car is looking lovely Paul.
Can we have a quick re-cap please? Two new wings, new bonnet and front panel? Was the other wing rusted?
Have the shop put some good protection under those new wings?
Or should I refer to the above web site?

Dave,

Here is the problem. The TR6 front hub is 2.625" OD and the rear hub is 1.875" OD, so the set will not be matched. Discount has none for the rear, so I may have to go to Prestige Wheel. I did see them last night while searching.

I will be doing a complete page on my web site about all of the work done to the car. The bonnet, LF fender and front panel along with the associated parts were damaged during the accident. There was a hole about the size of a quarter in the bottom of the RF fender, and since the insurance was paying for the R&R to check for hidden damage, as well as the new paint, I opted to buy a fender. I would have been foolish not to do so.

That is also why I added the new drains.

I'll get to that next week, after the new dash project and gauge refurbishing is done. My weekend will be full with that project.

Paul: You may have to consider a RoadForce balance. I had to do that to get the AR mags and new redlines balanced.

The Superlites on my Wedge vibrate a little too. seems to be worse above 127 MPH.

EDIT: Dave, thanks for the link and the tip. Ron is a great guy.

I just got off of the phone with Ron from Prestige Wheel Accessories in Fountain Valley, California. We had a long discussion about the old days and we finally got around to my wheels and possible "Hub Centric" issues. I learned a lot about things I never knew before when it comes to wheels and road forces, etc., but the bottom line is that he feels that without them, I'm never going to get rid of the problem completely. Before I even got into where I bought anything, he said he could help and just asked that I measure the front and rear hubs one more time before I call him back. Once I give him the dimensions, I own the parts.

His machinist will be in on Monday and he'll make me a new set of custom made poly carbonate hub centric rings, to fit my TR6 with the proper .010" clearances, both front and back, for $15.00 each plus shipping and I'll have them in time for the Cape Cod Club event next weekend.

Erik will spin the wheels/tires on his new Snap On balancer, just to make sure they're OK before reinstalling.

As an aside, Discount Tire is sending me a set to try, but Ron feels that they will be too sloppy, because there will be .060" clearance and for perfect centering of the wheels to the hubs and studs, that's too much.
 
Paul, I saw the picture of the mirrors on your re-painting page this morning and it took me a couple hours to track down the info on them. They look great! Definitely going to be a pair on my TR6 when I paint it.

Hmm, I think I have the same wheels, Konig Rewinds? I have noticed the holes for the wheel studs are a little big, but assumed the taper lug nuts would center the wheel, I always snug mine down with the wheel in the air, and work around the wheel doing the final tightening on each lug nut in smaller increments sequentially as they get snugged up. I haven't had any problems with vibration at speed, maybe lucky, don't know.
