my hood hits the wiper arms so i'm going to assume they're the wrong arms...moss apparently doesnt sell the correct ones..anyone have an idea where i can get proper arms? or anyone have a pair for sale?..thanks
My '63 has the same issue, I thought it was spacers so I went in there, the spacers were there, I added some more (cut from PCV pipe) behind the OEM ones, letting the splined ends only barely stick out enough to allow attachment of the arms. Hood still hits but it's better.
I guess I need the correct wipers too. Wonder how you positively ID them?
i'll have to look to see if any spacers are in there..any idea how thick they need to be? those 2 spots have no paint and are worn..if anyone has a way to id the difference in arms that would be extremely helpful not to mention save a future paint job..
I bet you have the spacers already, or you'd know it, I don't think you'd be able to tighten things up without them. I'd bet your in my boat: wrong arms. I'm waiting to hear how to ID them too.
Well, even if you get them to fit, they still won't actually function as wind shield wipers.
They're more of a "virtual concept" of a wiper than anything else.
End peice is exactly 1/2 inch. Arm across the joint is 1/2 inch as well. Oh yea, these wiper arms are orginal and stainless steel. I see no numbers on them but on the underside where the arm is rivited with two rivets to the part with the joint has an X stamped in it.
Moss has replacements, page 63, item # 14, Part # 165-005 @ 16.95 each.
Don't only assume it's the wiper arms that are wrong! As long as the spacers are in I can't see there can be much difference between one arm and another in how far the wiper arms are away from the screen.
Are you certain that the hood/bonnet* is lifting up the correct amount? Is it possible that someone has put longer supports in to make access easier to the engine or the curved bit on the hinge is curved a bit more tightly than it should have?
John
* added for clarity after I realised you were talking about the big metal bit that opens up to expose the engine and not the flappy clothy bit that stops (some) of the rain falling on your head. Does BabelFish do American to English?
I have a '70 midget and a '58 sprite. The wiper arms on the midget will not work on the sprite. (well, they will now that the bonnet flips forward, but before they wouldn't)
From what I've seen of the replacement arms from the "usual suspects" I'm not surprised that there are fit issues. Most won't even lay parallel to the base of the windshield when fully "down" because the angle is all wrong. How many "newly restored spridgets" have we seen lately with the blade up the windscreen at a 15 degree angle?
i can only guess without having both arms on hand that the 1/4" at the joint is the problem..the hood just nips it at opening but it's certainly enough to ruin the paint..the hinges mentioned above by john have been replaced and that makes me wonder too..after my next moss order i'll find out for sure
