Yesterday Ft. Sill had a B-52 out of Barksdale AFB perform a few practice bombing runs. Overall the B-52 made six passes and dropped 18 750 lbs. bombs. The B-52 made the passes at 10,000 ft. and so was close enough that you could clearly make it out as it circled over the area and made it's bombing runs. Funnily the local news outlets that reported on it beforehand stated that with it flying at 10,000 ft. you wouldn't be able to see it without binoculars. You could clearly make the bomber and when it banked you could even make out the engine nacelles.

I lived in Shreveport for years. Barksdale was right across the river, and "Buffs" ("Big Ugly Fat... ummm...) were a regular sighting. Amazing aircrafts.

Saw one about 20 years ago at an airshow. It sounded very 707-ish on its fly by, just louder .

Just for comparison, here's one of the WW1 German "Giant Bombers", the Siemens-Schukert VIII:

Those things have gone through so many revisions of their avionics, etc. Hard to believe they've been workhorses since the very early '50's!

Some current pilots are flying airframes their grandfathers flew!

I remember,in the mid-'60's,while going down hwy 99 near Merced,CA,
seeing these flying overhead, one after the other - HUGE!

They few from Castle AFB through the 80s. They would circle over the valley almost daily. Castle AFB is closed now and is just a museum.

I heard a pilot describing a B52 once on TV. I'm sure my figures are wrong but it went something like " A B52 has enough aluminum in it to make over 5000 garbage cans, over 100 miles of wiring, and the power of 10 locomotives and it flies like 5000 garbage cans attached to 100 miles of wire being dragged around by 10 locomotives."

I once saw a formation of B-52s

Thanks Boss!!! I've been waiting to see who would go first! and now one of my favourites! "Got me a car its as big as a whale"/ "Got me a Chrysler it seats about 20"

Oh, dear god, No. I've had to play this song too many times in my career. Even now, we still do it when clients ask for it. I ended up doing the male part because none of our regular male vocalists wants to touch this song. I can do a pretty good Fred Schneider impersonation. I find when I overemphasize his vocal characteristics, people really take notice.

Rock Lobster is a much better song, IMHO.

I do a really good Vanilla Ice and Marky Mark, too.
