Jim - here's a picture. Looks like the Liberty Foundation's "Liberty Belle".

Very sad, but sounds like the seven person crew all made it out ok.

Good to hear that everyone made it out safely. What a loss, though. Not many of those old birds still around.

Man, not a good day for flying. This and then the Blimp on the same day!

I sure hope they had it insured. Sometime the cost to insure for physical damage is prohibitive, though.

Tough loss for a great group of guys. I'm glad they're okay.

Glad everyone is ok. Those still prove to be very tough planes, that manage to get on the ground in the most extreme conditions.
What a major loss. Insurance coverage doesn't matter. that's irreplaceable.

Bad Ju-ju, glad the folks aboard got out without loss of life.

The bird is indeed irreplaceable though.

...our history dissipates with time...

Think I heard they are down to 13 remaining airworthy. Also heard that it caught fire in flight.

Interestingly (and not withstanding the damage) was watching the TV show Sea Hunters the other day and they were salvaging WWII planes from the bottom of the ocean - the fellow said, if they could get the ID plates + 15% of the plane, they could rebuild it and call it original. amazing. (A little like the antique hammer I have - it's had two heads and 5 handles)

Picture I saw showed that the l/h, (facing forward), inner had been shutdown in flight. May have started there.

I just read about this, that is too bad, not many left flying anymore. Here's some other pics of the plane, not much left of it.
